  • [livejournal.com profile] keori comes through with just how involved in the anti-marriage equality thing the Mormon church is. I do need to say, however, that I object to the expression of the violence fantasy in the first comment to the post. We do not need to up the violence rhetoric in any direction lest it encourage people to cross the line into action; it's a point we're sadly very close to.

  • And, CNN reports that 1 in 4 people are Muslim. Random informational news story or on their front page because this random fact about faith will scare lots of people into lots of page views? How long until this article is part of some hate-filled forward that, if I'm really lucky, will show up inappropriately on my Harry Potter mailing list?

  • But is politics isn't to your taste, that's okay. You can indulge in romanticizing criminals instead. This article comes complete with a random use of the "feral child" adjective. Buh?

  • Now, it doesn't take a lot to convince me that there are some crimes for which their perpetrators need to die. However, that's really, really not a business I want my government in from wrongful convictions to cost overruns to just raw incompetence. So, being anti-death penalty, I need to direct you to this link roundup from [livejournal.com profile] vichan about an ongoing situation in Ohio, which is super disturbing. I point, in particular to the "Are you okay?" "No" moment, which jumped out, unfortunately, I suppose, at the writer in me.

  • New legislation in Oklahoma seeks to put private data about abortions online, in a manner that's not only a medical privacy violation, but statistically misleading.

  • Remember that hideous painting I linked you to the other day? Well now someone has put up a new version with all the text changed. Thanks to Patty for finding both versions.

  • A list of Sydney's fancy dress shops informs us we can dress up like Aeroplane Jelly. Australia, I love you.

  • Xenophobia and the Lambert. Embarrassingly, in an article that's supposed to be about other people's fail, the random gratuitous Quaddafi mention was pretty much its own fail. Oh, New York Times, I don't really love you.

  • Holy crap, Peter Davison, pulled out of Gally 2010 (he's on for Gally 2011), but more positive guest announcements are coming soon.

  • Also, and this is specifically for [livejournal.com profile] redstapler and [livejournal.com profile] marchek, Tony's going to be at DWNY on the 28th, so we as the Torchwood Lesbians (bwuh?!) need to be there, although it's not really the ideal environment for the 2009 Catty Precog Gally Reunion Gossip Dissemination Beerfest.

  • Little kitty is squeaking in her sleep.

  • In most cases, the phrase you are looking for is for all intents and purposes not for all intensive purposes. Thank you.

  • Also, don't forget, tomorrow is Bomb the Moon Day!

If we *are* going to have a death penalty... and I'm not totally against it for some crimes... *nobody* should have to wait twenty fucking years for it to be carried out.

Pity about Davison, but that might just mean he's busy working over that time-period. Still looking forward to Sarah Sutton's attendance, and whoever they can draft in as a headliner.

I tried to read the link before commenting. But the first page didn't elaborate as to what the liberal bias is, and I got about as far as their want to abolish unisex language before deciding it's not worth reading the link to find out first-hand.

It can be summed up in their goal to "debunk the pervasive and hurtful myth that Jesus would be a political liberal today."

Also if you can get past the wtf-ness, the part about how socialism is in the Bible because of how many times the word "comrade" is used, is pretty funny.

The best part is on the talk page, where people who can actually look up Greek and Hebrew words in a dictionary fail to convince the guy that he's full of it.

Oh, it get better. According to his mom (aired on local Seattle TV), he's doing this because the school system failed him. Not *her*, not that he's a criminal.... because her bitty boy didn't get enough attention from his teachers.

Although now I'm looking at the site and he's gonna be in Legally Blonde: The Musical?! AWESOME. I'll admit, that show is actually kind of fun. If you can tolerate pink. I must find out who he's playing!

My mother and I use to be Mormon, when I was seven or so (we even lived in Utah for some time). She never really explained why she left the church, but I'm glad she did. I'm still in contact with Mormon friends, and while I know one is very liberal, the others are so conservative I worry being in their company. My favorite from them, thus far though, is "liberalism should meet God."

And I will so take a romanticized criminal over painting all of them as heartless sociopaths that can't be helped at all.

I am sad about Davison, but unmoved in my plans to attempt to attend. Roar.

I sort of love that article about the distribution of Muslims, oddly enough. I know it's likely to scare stupid people, but the way it challenges the assumptions that stupid people have about Islam, and where it's practiced? Weirdly satisfying.

That McNaughton painting sends me into the kind of "BWUH?"-flavored brain lock that makes it hard for me to reason with people.

I learned the alphabet verbally (thanks to catchy little songs, I guess) before I learned the corresponding letters, and it took me weeks to get over the fact that there was no letter called elemeno.

That is an excellent alphabet song.

I used this to learn my Nordic runes, which came in very handy when my roommate and I saw a lame plastic dagger with runes on it and were able to determine that it didn't just have random runes to make it look extra lame evil and cool. Oh no. The runes spelled out "Death Blade" and we could totally read it.

We bought it too; the two of us sing a duet for Odin and Loki about their relationship and they need a lame plastic dagger that has "Death Blade" written on it in runes. Especially one with a skeleton on the hilt--ohgodwhydowehavethisthing?

Thankfully, the Oklahoma law is a sufficiently clear HIPAA violation that I expect it to go away very soon, w/o even the worries generated by this going to the Supreme Court.

    Xenophobia and the Lambert

*blinks* that was an impressively random Quaddafi reference. As with the CNN article, more proof that anti-Muslim feelings continue to thrive.

The Ohio case is indeed exceptionally disturbing, I'm very much hoping that the end result is a ban of execution there.
