So Patty and I went to Meredith Monk's Songs of Ascension at BAM tonight.

I have a pretty intense love of non-verbal or made-up languages voice music and Patty thought this looked interesting when we needed one more thing to get tickets for for the season discount.

Now, there were moments where this got me. Where sounds came together and it was mourning, which is the sort of thing that appeals to my near congenital sadness and seems to be a country I visit in my head a great deal.

But inevitably, those moments of beauty were interrupted by the performers gracing us with dog yelping sounds.

I feel so utterly ridiculous to provide this as a review. I should be more attuned to the experimental and the nature of what we were being shown here and so forth. But no, all I've got for you is dog yelping.

DOG YELPING.

And now I'm walking around with this odd grief, a lack of suitable fiction, and no where for it to go.

DOG YELPING.

Monk's work has some gorgeous moments, but sometimes her avant affectations mar her work.

(I should know.)

And that is entirely my problem with modern music.
