I said fuck it.

Wearing my black suit, and my striped peach shirt, and the Ianto tie and it is SO MUCH BETTER.

All the boys here are nervous. They say "but I miss the green dress!" I laugh, like a girl, since I'm supposed to and I say, "well, it's just that you all looked so good in your suits yesterday, I had to try too."

That seems to placate them, but it also seems clear that they know I'm a liar, that I don't mean it like that, that I'm just saying it so we can all get past it. And then I smile in a way that isn't for anyone real.

The church bells rang all night last night, often erroneously -- 4:15am, 6 chimes at 5am, etc. Strange. And I have not slept in such a small bed since I was a child. It's narrower than twin. Yeah.

I know it probably doesn't mean as much when it comes from someone you can't see halfway around the world, but your outfit sounds fabulous, and judging from your site I think you look fantastic in guy duds. Don't let someone's poor taste get you down. A good friend of mine once pointed out to me that the reason guys get nervous around women like us is because they know that for a small fee, we can have whatever kind of penis we want, in any colour, shape or size we choose. If they're twitchy, take it as a compliment -- it's probably because you've shown them up.

But what do the women say? I was much struck when you said that when you boy-dress in NYC you get a lot of supportive/appreciative looks and comments from women, while you make straight-presenting men nervous. Are you getting the same general reactions there?

This is what I was going to ask as well.

I am the only US woman here. Reactions from the other women here have ranged from silently hostile or superior acting (they are beautiful! I am not!) to total indifference (which is sort of nice).

Wear what makes you comfortable. And, face it, you've got some seriously amazing suits. Or would they prefer you in petticoats and bustles? Last I checked, we're past the era where a woman in trousers was scandalous.

And I'd bet anything, the church bells are for time telling. Every 15 minutes, the ringing pattern gets a bit longer, and the longest ring is the top of the hour, followed by the shortest ring at 15 after? May not be Westminster chimes, but... That wasn't at all uncommon in most Swiss towns I've visited. The bells I could deal with. The fact that the whole town more or less shut down at lunch time, I could not :)

*tips her hat to your class, elegance and refusal to knuckle under*

You, Ms. Maltese, are both a lady and a gentleman.

Well done. It sounds a bit like Switzerland is a nation filled with both anti-semitism and archaic gender roles.
