cruise: Bonaire, pt. 2

So I mentioned the Thai junk that used to be owned by a CIA agent. That boat is the Samur and it took us from where the Noordam docked out to Klein Bonaire (meaning "Little Bonaire"), a small uninhabited island form which we went snorkeling. It was a bit chilly and windy, but it was a gorgeous day -- both on the boat and when we got to the island. We also saw lots of flying fish heading out to Klein Bonaire, but I was too stunned to get any photos.

This is the sappy post. Lots of Patty and I being schmoopy.





Patty shortly after we boarded the Samur. Getting to the Samur required we take a small, motorized inflatable tender and then climb up the side of the boat. It was just a couple of steps, not a big deal, but I was really worried it would TOTALLY freak me out. But it was okay, even sort of fun. Being on the Samur was pretty much instantly the best thing in the world. We bought the t-shirt (it looked really Browncoat, okay?), and I miss the boat.




Check out the Noordam in the background. Random people were waving from their verandahs. You'd be amazed how many people don't even bother to get off the boat in port.

Boats anchor in the shallows of Klein Bonaire. A lot of them. So you have to pay attention when you're snorkeling, lest you get hit by one (or an asshole on a jet ski with a keg, as Patty reported). Dudes, check out my abs (but seriously, what's the butch or genderqueer answer for bathing suits? I go with this ridiculous pink thing I bought in Chicago a couple of years ago, because it's _so_ femme I love it to pieces. Only sequins could feel more camp).

I am totally in love with this boat. Even though I get seasick and water tries to drown me.

Boyshorts and femmy bikini top is one answer (like, belted swim shorts, not baggy nasty surf dude shorts). Or the right sort of tank top - like a tankini top - can be sort of butch. I am doomed to two-piece bathers as I have a long weird torso; I usually go for belted faux-scuba Bond-girl numbers that look like you could totally wear a big knife with them, although I also sometimes have a weakness for ridiculously campy girly things.

I'm not exactly a tomboy, but I am not comfortable exposing my stomach. I've found that tankinis or other suits with long tops work pretty well for me.

I've only found a very few tankinis made for long torsos, unfortunately. (And many of those are not in my size.) I think they're a great style, though.

Re: swimwear, I wear a rash guard and swim trunks. There's no definitive answer and there was rather a debate in a certain genderqueer thread over it at one point.
