  • A new look at funeral urns.

  • Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ekatarina for linking to Keith Olberman responding to John Stewart's take down of him. It's mostly, actually a Stewart clip, but you also get a clip of what Stewart's responding to (which is Olberman and his epic stream of rage-filled adjectives) and the whole thing is pretty hilarious and sort of weirdly adorable.

  • From [livejournal.com profile] celiac is a link to a way to sign up for free gluten-free product samples and coupons and stuff. I just signed up, so don't know how worthwhile it is, but there you go.

  • Today we looked at cats in the Petco adoption area. Not in a serious way, but in a getting used to looking at cats way, because Pretty does need a friend. One of them looked so much like Little it was eerie. She had a big, fat "I hate you" face and everything.

  • I have spent a not insignificant part of this day on the phone to sketchy gun ranges in Los Angeles.

  • Tonight at 8 is your last chance to see this run of Dogboy & Justine We'll be there, so if you are, say hi.

  • Last night we went to see Fantastic Mr. Fox which I liked very much and found to have a lot of emotional resonance, largely because of the burnt orange 1970s color-scheme. Of course, Mr. Fantastic Fox himself who admits he can't shut the hell up or just stop because he always has to make sure people think he's really fantastic is a personality impulse I recognize too well in myself. I also loved Ash and his silly sock/bandit mask and the intensely eerie moment with the wolf and the sociopathic beatnik rat (of course that was Willem Dafoe, OF COURSE) and "if what I think is happening here is happening, it better not be." LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  • Torchwood fic rec: [livejournal.com profile] sqyd wrote Secrets and I liked it a lot. It's a fix-it, but it's a complicated one. [livejournal.com profile] sqyd uses a non-linear narrative, which I think the Whoniverse almost demands, and tells the story through moments versus the details of emotional development. The OC, David, could have easily been thrown away and forgotten in the story's resolution, but he's not, and there are aspects of the tale that re-raise the questions brought to us in Random Shoes. It's not a perfect story, and it's arguably fluff, but it was diverting, engaging and emotional and effectively fulfilled a type of story need while being something somewhat different.

  • In Boston? On January 29 Go Rogue with Dixie Douya, Busty Keaton, Ms. Sassypants, and Lilly Bordeaux. There will also be circus performers and muppets.

Hee, I like the Keith Olbermann clip. I had wanted to see it last night because I figured he would probably respond to Stewart. And I approve of his response! So it's awesome.

Wow. Keith showed both a self-effacing sense of humor, and class. Nicely done.

The Olbermann/Stewart thing was very much both the things you said. I think I'll go watch it again, now.

You and Patty should get a lizard or a tortoise. They are entertaining and other than an expensive light bulb relatively easy to care for depending on breed. And they keep cats entertained.

When my Dad died, my Mom looked into urns, and not only was she turned off by the selection available for her, but also in how expensive it all was. It seems ridiculous to spend that much money on a box, regardless if that box was supposed to hold something so precious. My Dad himself would've hated all of it.

So my brother went down to his old high school, and in a few hours in the wood working shop, made a beautiful wooden box for Dad's ashes. Not only did it cost far less, it was so much nicer than the fancy crap they offered at the funeral home, and Dad would've been so proud of it.

He's since made 3 or 4 more boxes for others in the family, and they look so beautiful. I want to get one made and then doodle on it, because people always know that I've been around by my inability to resist doodling on any and every surface available. :) I totally want "Heather was here" on my urn!

I know, I know, I talk too much, especially for one little tiny link. But I've had alcohol again tonight, and I sure can babble when I drink. ;)

My family was lucky -- the funeral home had a red granite ginger jar-style urn that suited Mom perfectly. After the ashes were sealed inside, we displayed it on a little stand in the living room until the internment at what will one day be Dad's grave in Arlington.

On a lighter note, “Busty Keaton”?!? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
