  • Buffy! Right, so, I completely don't get why you peopel say I'm going to identify with the character, but I looooooooooooooooove Wesley. Also, loved that they made Xander losing his virginity a plot point as opposed to "we only make drama about this for the female characters." Does Giles ever get to be happy or is his life one tragic annoyance after another? I feel bad for the guy. Buffy/Faith - hot hot hot hot hot hot hot.

  • While we're on those subjects, here's a sentence I never need to see again. Seriously, I don't care what the fandom is, but STOP WRITING THIS SENTENCE: "His young lover was nothing if not imaginative." I hate that sentence.

  • There is finally a Twitter app for my mobile, which means when I tweet from whereever, I can finally see your replies.

  • So today, I assume, will come the WhoYork announcement that didn't come yesterday. I've already figured out what it is (and am more excited than is remotely reasonable) and just wish it would be official already so I can squee squee squee all the way home. ETA: Now it can be told! RUSSELL TOVEY, kids! March 7!

  • CNN showcases "amazingly tiny" home offices, that, as a native New Yorker, look perfectly normal to me.

  • The new gay theater.

  • Target cancer, the first in a series of articles from the New York Times that continues all week.

  • Things that really really annoy me: bodegas where the cash machines are out of order and there's a minimum (which is illegal) to use your credit or debit card. I'm calling 311 on someone RIGHT NOW.

  • [livejournal.com profile] redstapler sent me this, if you click on it, you will get nothing done today: sushi cat.

Wesley actually has a much longer journey than what you see in Season 3 of Buffy. He has some nice development in Buffy, but when he becomes a regular character in Angel, there is a lot more development of his character. He's one of my favorite characters actually.

Agreed. His character arc on Angel was one of the best things in the series, particularly in the 3rd and 4th season, which were, imho, the weakest seasons of Angel.

    From: [identity profile] tommx.livejournal.com
I agree third season was weak. 4th season was uneven. There were some episodes that I really liked and some that I felt were essentially filler which is always a shame to me. The highlight of Season 4 was the Vegas episode. :-)

    Date: 2010-02-23 02:54 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] offbalance.livejournal.com
Fair enough. Vegas was great - but the three-episode arc where a certain character from Buffy shows up to help was the best, IMHO. Particularly "Orpheus." That's one of my favorites from the whole series.

Really? I thought the third season of Angel was absolutely on fire myself, couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I agree the fourth lost some of that momentum. Obviously mileage varies :)

I have a long list of reasons why, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who could easily be watching the show very soon, you know?

    Obviously mileage varies :)
In my opinion, that's the beauty of any kind of art (including well-made television): one person's "ehh," is another's "OMFG." And, in an ideal situation, someone's OMFG can turn an "ehh" around.

(My absolute favorite season of Angel was Season 1, followed somewhat closely by Season 5.)

Hooray for a Twitter app! (Will you be live-tweeting Gally panels this time, or just IMing as before?)

there's a minimum (which is illegal) to use your credit or debit card.

I didn't know about the illegal bit; I've seen such minimums elsewhere and thought it was standard procedure, and probably understandable considering the way credit card companies are wont to rip off vendors as well as customers. ATMs being out of order is a major problem, however.

    Date: 2010-02-23 02:33 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe I'll do it for one of John Fay's panels, but probably not. It sort of only worked as a format for the cracky cracky Kai and Gareth show.

    Date: 2010-02-23 02:43 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] ambyr.livejournal.com
It's not precisely -illegal-, which is to say it's not like there's a law against it. But it -does- violate the agreements vendors are required to sign with the credit card companies in order to accept credit cards. They're just counting on no one reporting them to Visa or Mastercard, and on the card companies being too busy to deal with it if someone does.

A now-closed coffee shop that my dad invested in went cash-only because of those fees. Looking back, that was probably a sign that the place wouldn't last, unfortunately. Can there be other ways to deal with the fees? I'm the wrong one to ask, I have no business sense. And even people with business sense don't seem sure of a way to deal.

I have seen some places with signs requesting a minimum, on the grounds that they can't actually require one but that they'd like their customers to know that small card transactions cost them too much.

I don't have a problem with that, and will (unless I'm out of cash and desperate) respect those requests.

And Wesley -- haaawt. You'll have to start watching Angel as well, btw. :)

Lol, everyone has already said it, but Wesley is a huge huge favourite of mine too, and he has a brilliantly organic journey into being a proper grown up over on Angel, they really nailed exploring the dark side of his character without forgetting who he was to start with.

    Also, Faith \o/

    "Young lover". Yeah, no.

I don't like the word "lover" anyway. Who says that? (I know some probably do, but somewhere along the line this word has been ruined for me.)

    Buffy/Faith = hot is right!

Wish I lived in New York!

    Date: 2010-02-23 04:11 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
The problem isn't just "lover" in that sentence (although, yes, it's part of it). It's also the tell vs. show factor. And really... what does that sentence contribute? It contributes nothing.

    Date: 2010-02-23 04:39 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com
I find "lover" used as a referenced noun to be less awful. As in, "a former lover of mine" or "I took a lover."

    But any other context? Hurf.

    Date: 2010-02-23 04:41 pm (UTC)

    "a former lover of mine"

That is a phrase I'll use, because sometimes it's the only way to put something that's both polite and accurate (as they are not an ex)

    Point.

Once, the spouse and I were in a bar and met a woman who basically told us her life story. So whenever I hear "I took a lover", I mentally put it into her fabulous Hungarian accent. "So then... I TOOK A LOVER~!"

Unless there's some sort of local law against it, calling the legal authorities won't help with the credit card minimum violators. Contacting the companies of the credit cards they accept is more useful, as that's a direct violation of their service agreement with them. Most credit card companies have a form on their website for registering this complaint.

If I had the brain power, I would use that as a prompt to do something hilarious. Unfortunately, I am on a deadline. Fiddlesticks!

Also, loved that they made Xander losing his virginity a plot point...

YES! Yes. *does his little Xander dance of joy.* Among the things Joss does quite well in Buffy is that he balances out some of the gender tropes in ways we don't often see. He did some of the same in Firefly, I think, with Wash and Zoe. He ain't perfect, but he's...something.

So, I'm thinking that this Tovey thing in New York is where we'll get the official TW S4 announcement. Either that or the annoucement will be made in the 24 hours before his appearance.

    Date: 2010-02-23 10:49 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
I wouldn't link it with this too closely (the NY event is small -- 100 people max). He's doing an event in Florida a few days later. While we've certainly had one episode con guests before (Georgia Moffett at Gallifrey One, for example), I too feel like something's coming; I'm just not sure of the timing. Here's fucking hoping though.

    Date: 2010-02-23 10:53 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] lefaym.livejournal.com
Ah, okay, maybe the annoucement will come at (or be timed for) the Florida event then. It just seems awfully convenient that Tovey is doing all this Who-related stuff within a week of the Being Human finale.

    Date: 2010-02-23 10:55 pm (UTC)
    From: [identity profile] rm.livejournal.com
Agreed there. The Florida event is also small, and I'm assuming that he's in the states for other reasons. If I weren't so aware of how long it takes the BBC to get its press release ducks in a row, I'd say yes, an announcement will happen that week. But is it coming? Yeah, I think it's coming. Even if it's not that week.

But the BBC has probably been planning this for quite a while. Given that JB made a few slip-ups about TW S4 in December, I think there was probably a plan to make the official announcement in January, after EoT2 aired, which was delayed a bit so that Being Human could finish out it S2.

I had no idea that it was illegal somewhere to set credit/debit minimums! Just about every shop in Australia has a $10 minimum - our pharmacy doesn't (because concession prescriptions are $5.40) and people are always surprised at this.

Wesley rocks. And I love Faith (and Buffy/Faith). Season three was when I really fell in love with the show (I didn't really like the first two seasons all that well, personally).

Do you think you'll watch Angel at all? Like others have mentioned, Wesley really plays a big role and gets a lot of character development there.

    1. Wesley has one of the best character arcs in the buffyverse, but you have to follow him to "Angel" to really get more out of him
