  • Portraits of gay men and lesbians in the armed services, faces hidden, were taken by Jeff Sheng for his book, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

  • While CNN has been covering whatever it is it covers these days, Lt. Dan Choi handcuffed himself to the gates of the White House to protest DADT. As someone who went to Act-Up protests at the White House in the early 90s (the cops used to wear latex gloves for us) and has been saying that queer activists need to get angrier, I was surprised by how desperately sad this made me.

  • A discussion on Women's Lit. Despite the fact that the book I'm writing really is chick lit, the moniker of "women's literature" makes me somewhat aghast.

  • On the Bow'ry. This is my city.

  • I'm dressed up today since I'm going to the opera tonight. Big cheers for the delivery dude who was all "love the suit" in a completely purely appreciating the suit way earlier today.

  • So White Collar is giving me deep, deep love of a style and era of suits that have, historically, done nothing for me. And man, I wish I could wear those. And I can't. I can't wear suits that narrowly cut, because they'll totally show off my tiny shoulders and big hips. And wow, does that make me cranky. For someone that's had the skinny privilege of not really having to have body/weight issues ever, the men's clothing really brings it out in me. But it is what is it is. Can't change where my bones are.

  • Also, speaking of White Collar, I've slept on it, and I'm still like "Peter, that was a totally dick move." Moving along....

  • Last night I heard helicopters overhead while watching my TV obsession of the moment. It was sort of funny, but we don't live near a helipad and you get to know the sound of a copter circling looking for a suspect. Something really intense must have happened last night as more than a block and a half was taped off as a police crime scene by our subway station this morning. So, some sort of chase to cover that much ground. And I'd assume a cop getting shot, but I can't find it in the news, so I've no idea. Lovely. ETA: Oh, so this is what happened.

  • [livejournal.com profile] reannon posted this awesome link about Masks, alternative identities, heteronyms and writing. I want to have the time (and I don't) to talk about the ways in which this ties into fandom (emotional responses to shows), cosplaying (me walking around the house going "where the fuck is Jack's navy blue shirt?" -- seriously is that more or less disturbing that saying "where's my navy blue shirt?" the answer, is, I think, less obvious than it appears at first glance -- and yes, that's what I sound like when packing for a con) and all sorts of good stuff. So, read that.

  • [livejournal.com profile] popfiend linked to Scott Adams on Leadership Energy and I think, yeah that is _so_ true. I totally see this in action both in my ability to get groups of people to do stuff and how my energy and authority peters out simultaneously when my introversion makes me too tired to keep going in that vein. It's the ongoing fight of my existence. I fundamentally hate the things my introversion bars me from succeeding at, despite the fact that my introversion is very much responsible for a lot of the great things in my life and jeez, not everyone has to be the asshole in charge.

...that is a fascinating link about heteronyms, and there are probably books to be written about heteronymity in fandom/cosplay/the Internet at large.

Is it okay that I find this adorable? Both for sentiment and for phrasing?

that link regarding the masks... thanks very much, I may not dress up in cosplay, but can appreciate the difference between the wife who goes to work in a mundane job and the woman who writes NC:17 fic of two men getting it on ... definitely food for thought

About the extrovert thing. The hard part about that on the extrovert end is the assumption that you somehow want to be in charge if you are an extrovert.

There are things I am simply not good at that I don't want to do, and other people want me to do because I'm the extrovert in the room.

    /my 2 cents

The thing is I seem like an extrovert. I just get very, very tired and then have to go stare at a wall for a little while.

    This is very, very true.

I'm an extrovert and am happy to weigh in on things, but I don't like to lead meetings, for example.

    **SQUEEEE!!!**

Donald Macgillavry by Silly Wizard is part of my sound track to college! I particularly associated it with [livejournal.com profile] eac; it was her song. Queen of argylle was another friend's.

I've wasted hours in college listening to Silly Wizard hanging with my buds.

**sniff** Now, I miss my far-flung college friends. **waves to the ether**

When I used to live in Woodlawn and I'd hear the helicopters--I could generally turn on the local news and find out that an 11 year old had just been shot or a cop had been stabbed. It always weirded me out when I couldn't figure what they were doing!

ooh thank you for the link to the times article. I grew up hanging out at the Bowery Lane theater (though Wikipedia insists on spelling it Bouwerie and has a photo with the sign of the company I grew up with still hanging out front, even though they are now sadly gone) and have er... interesting :) and fond memories of the area. A sting operation with undercover cops acting like bums hanging out on the theater steps for weeks anyone?

They were right across the street from both the Amato Opera AND CBGB's which made for a hell of an interesting cross section of audience go-ers between the three companies on the weekends! :)

Such a fascinating area of town. I love being in CA, but I miss those types of nooks and crankies that you only seem to find in NY.

Apropos of very little, I suppose, but I showed the Duchess Clothier website to my S.O. yesterday and now one of their suits is next in line of his Things To Buy list. (He is 6'1" and 140 pounds, and store-bought suits have never fit him, ever.) So much appreciation for the link. :)

Thanks for the link about heteronyms and writing. I don't write much poetry these days but in college I wrote a fair bit, and I had two separate pseudonym identities that I used - initially created because one was necessary for anonymizing competition submissions, and continued because it was somehow compelling to have this other identity. In retrospect, the poems attributable to each share certain writing characteristics. I definitely remember knowing who these people were, and they were distinct.

I play on the Internet. I'm basically me, but...I'm me without family or colleagues looking on, without RL constraints. I recently reworked some fandom-related writing for submission elsewhere under my own name, and it was interesting (in a navel-gazing sort of way) to compare the tone of what I ended up with, with what was originally there.

The link on leadership resonated greatly as well, thanks again for that.
