  • Home. Really, really home (oh my god, our bed is SO comfortable). I think it helped this morning, racing to work on the FDR Drive. It makes it like New York cares about its water, and I think, too, that's why London and Cardiff resonated for me so hard. I only like places with water.

  • There are, of course, a hundred things I need to catch up on. Banking crap, mobile company crap, talking to my publisher, edits on a story, all things that I either meant to do in London or right when I got back, that I quickly discovered were not going to happen at all, while there, especially while in limbo there.

  • If you are considering going to Hurricane Who this year, you should be aware of this summary of the situation currently surrounding the 2010 and 2009 conventions before registering or booking at this time.

  • I feel I need to note my ongoing "Did RTD lift EVERYTHING from Angel for Torchwood?" thing isn't really a criticism. Mostly, I'm charmed by seeing what I perceive to be innate fannishness in the Torchwood narrative. Like retcon, there's something really hilariously charming about being able to read Jack/Ianto as an Angel/Wesley AU with better clothes.

I think, where that feeling particularly struck me is that whole thing where Wesley messes with that girl with telekenesis about her dad and Angel is all "you need to go!" and Cordy's all "you can't fire him" and Wesley is all "I get it; I'll be at my flat" (a flat which, you get the impression, he doesn't see that often). It's a great moment, and one that really feels the most like Torchwood so far, even if it's one of the least obvious places the more recent show pulled from. But I can't stop thinking about that scene and how the answer to "how can this scene be a higher stakes AU?" gets us to "Ianto's banging Jack while hiding his half-robot girlfriend in the basement" "Cyberwoman."

What's particularly hilarious, of course, is that I'm watching this in the wrong order. I think if I'd watched Angel and then Torchwood, I'd be like "oh, influence" as opposed to "OMGWTFBBQFANFICTIONRTD!"

  • Speaking of there only being seven plots in the universe, Buffy -- the Dawn plot-line really reminds me of The Fifth Element.

  • The Archie comics have their first openly gay character. via [livejournal.com profile] coyotegoth.

  • This isn't how it usually goes: A political rival has accused another politician of lying about his bisexuality in order to pander to LGBTQ voters.

  • Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth is writing Trans Bodies, Trans Selves and is taking questions from New York Times readers. Additionally, there is a survey for trans people and non-gender conforming people that's part of the process of the book being put together.

Glad to hear that you and Patty have returned home safe and sound to kitties!

I'm really enjoying your Angel recaps, in part because I've been just a few episodes ahead of you and Patty the whole time (hadn't seen the series before). I can't wait to hear what you think of "Guise Will Be Guise." ETA: Also the "Fool For Love"/"Darla" crossover. I DID NOT KNOW FFL WAS PART OF THIS CROSSOVER ALL THIS TIME. HOLY CRAP.

The Dawn/Leeloo thing totally resonated for me as well. Except Leeloo is occasionally more eloquent, and more endearing where chicken is concerned. But yes.

There must be a TV Tropes entry for this phenomenon, but danged if I can think of the name.

I wish I'd seen the link about the politicians before making my last post. It fits right in.

I've been tasked with checking out different iPhone comic apps - I think I'll check out Archie first. I always loved reading those when I was younger. Should be fun.

    Oh, definitely.

I can't remember who I've most recently heard this exact wording from (I want to say it was in a television interview with Moffat or someone associated with the new new Who crew) was that RTD was and is basically just a really big fan of certain things, and is really quite fannish, and that it's a factor in his work. It makes perfect sense.

Good luck with edits, etc. Also, insert Schrodinger's nagging about Bristol here. ;)

I had a whole long thing written out about Angel and Torchwood etc. but decided that it'll all be easier to talk about further down the road.

Accusing someone of faking bisexuality to be popular with LGBTQ people is unusual for politics, yeah. Unfortunately not so unusual elsewhere...

I'm talking about Roland Barthes' The Pleasure of the Text in relation to reading fan fiction. (Of course, I just outed my name for anyone who reads the program, but that's okay.) My interest is in applying literary theory, especially narrative theory, to fan fiction. I'm nearly done with my paper. I'll send it to you when I finish, if you like.

Heard about this through the GLBT professonal network listserv that I'm on: a NYC-based gay rights venture called The Right Side of History -- thought you might be interested in a)knowing it exists, and b) passing on the info. (They passed it on to us because they're looking for student interns, but since they say "it will be the first public platform designed to harness the viral nature of the Internet to motivate a new constituency of supporters for LGBT equality" I figure the more people who know about it, the better.)

Ooh, cool! Survey! I just filled out it. Although I kept wanting to relate my genderqueer identity and experiences to my bisexual identity, because the two are so connected for me. It was hard to JUST talk about gender and not sex as well. (I actually left that in a comment box near the end for potential topic suggestions.)

Are you thinking about contributing a piece for the book? I think you should - you write so beautifully. :-)

It's weird, I was totally shipping Angel/Wesley when I watched the first two seasons of Angel, but I didn't really think of it in terms of Jack/Ianto parallels (though I could of course see the paralles between Angel and Jack, and between the two shows in general). Perhaps its because my (subjective) impression from CoE was that RTD didn't ship Jack/Ianto at all (quite the opposite), so I didn't really think that he would have used Angel/Wesley as an influence there (because Angel/Wesley comes across quite strongly to me).

Yet, I did find writing my Jack/Wesley crossover very easy -- it felt quite natural to do so. When I was absorbed in writing it, I pretty much forgot that they were from different 'verses, and it seemed impossible to me that I had never seen them on screen together... so perhaps this is yet another case of my conscious mind being completely disconnected from my subconscious mind as far as CoE is concerned.
