  • Kiana Firouz still desperately needs our help. The UK, having denied her asylum request, wants to deport her back to Iran, where she will in all probability be executed for being a lesbian and political activist.

  • Well, SPN folks, looks like you dodged that bullet. Was it satisfying?

  • [livejournal.com profile] gina_r_snape saw someone die at work yesterday.

  • The search for an apartment's original tenant.

  • Arizona racism in action.

  • When I talk about the awesome, but completely randomized/frustrating public transit in Sydney, I usually talk about ShittyRail. But this post about the bus system is priceless.

  • [livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner has an Alan Rickman story that beats my Alan Rickman story. Also, it involves the Welsh. Come on, you know you have to click.

  • The Hewitt thing is today. I took a different coat out of the closet, since I need to do a slight repair on the one I usually wear. This is one my mother bought me that I never wear because I find it a bit dowdy or something, but over the very 1940s look of the dress I'm wearing, it's sort of freakishly brilliant.

  • Speaking of dresses, sometimes I like them. Especially if they are vintage-y and/or speak to that "if Jack Harkness was a chick" instinct in my wardrobe. So do I want to buy this or this? I'm sort of all over this too, but I don't need it the way I need me some blue and white polka dots.

  • Ages ago, a photog I worked with even more ages ago friended me on Facebook. My Facebook pic is masculine, and the friending note said "you, er, look different now, but I hope you're well." I finally friended a bunch of random people back last night, and so he's since written on my wall "nice tie! hope you're well." To which I say to you all: if you have a question, just fucking ask it; otherwise, I'm ignoring this shit.

  • More Angel last night. WHAT THE FUCK WITH THIS VAMPIRE BABY PLOTLINE? IS IT BECAUSE ANGEL HAS A SOUL? I'm going to fucking HATE this plotline, aren't I? Also, still hate Wesley's hair.

Anyway, aside from that... Kal Penn in another thankless Whedon role! And I loved, loved that mess of a situation with Gunn's old crew and the karaoke bar and the demon murders and Angel and Wesley and just -- THIS IS MY SORT OF TV. But yeah, it's dark, and it hurts and nobody wins, and I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about what's clearly going to be the endless murky miserable grind of this season.

Now, because I can't talk about Angel without talking about Torchwood: Wesley pretty much has all of Ianto and Jack's best as well as most brutal qualities. I can't look away. I mean, I really, really can't look away.

    What's your Alan Rickman story?

And you're going to post photo of you in dress and coat, right? [shameless plea]

Polka dots! Everyone needs navy and white polka dots. I like both dresses but I LOVE the lines on the second one. I also really like the yellow and black floral; It would be awful on me but I think yo would look wonderful in it.

The Sadie seems more 'you' and will show off your assets better. The Ashley is more demure, but who knows, maybe you're going for that. Are wrist-length white gloves involved, and a wicker handbag?

I like the third dress the best. I must ask, though, does yellow work on you? It's such a tricky color to wear.

I like the Ashley the best - the puffed sleeves on the second one seem small and a little out of place. (I don't like puffed sleeves - I think they look babyish on grown women so I may not be making an unbiased decision).

I also like the third one a lot - and since you can wear yellow - that's a very lovely one as well.

What was your Alan Rickman story?

Also, not that it matters, but I vote for the black and yellow dress. :)

I was thinking it was time to bring Kiana's plight up again, so thanks for linking to that site. I've sent an email to No.10. I'll send one to the Home Office. God knows whether it will do any good but it can't do any harm. I might try my local MP, though he's Labour, and this happened under their watch. The one positive light is that the new Home Office minister is a woman who does not seem to suffer the homophobia of some of her right-wing colleagues. At least, that's what I understand.

The dress with the red belt looks more Jack to me. It's sharper in its lines, though still curvy as hell.

I haven't watched Angel S3, but I heard the plot summarized and went o.^ because I wouldn't let that shit pass in any roleplaying game ever. If I were playing with a GM who did, I'd go find another game.

The vampire baby plotline makes me want to poke out my own eyeballs with a spork. That is why I am a big fan of seasons 1 and 5 and... not much in the middle.

Also, I hear you met my lovely [livejournal.com profile] supertailz last week! Hurray small world!

I ... actually love the, uh, "vampire baby storyline," and I freaking hate baby storylines pretty much always. I think this particular one is true to the tone of the show, which is very very dark, and provides opportunity for a lot of very interesting character exploration that we wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

The parts of the baby storyline that suck (Dad, Provider) are worth it to get to the parts that are AWESOME. (Everything from about Loyalty onward and basically all of S4.)

    Also, Bitter Pregnant Darla! Yay!

There is much about vampire pregnancy story line that sucks, but there is also a bit of brilliant in it, so hang in there.

Honestly as a SPN person I'm not sure how I feel. I really liked the episode but of the four people who died before the last commercial break they brought three of them back (up for some debate in one case) and that feels a bit like cheating. I really wonder what was supposed to happen if this had been the end of the series as originally intended, instead of them needing to set up a season 6.

SPN: My vote was one hundred per cent in favor. (with one caveat)

I teared up in the first minute and sniffled my way through the story. I was completely invested in the characters. IF, this had been the final end good-bye, I would have been completely satisfied, even if the characters had stayed dead. It just felt like it completed the story. I hope they manage next season without killing the strength of this ep.

Regarding the deaths: One of them, I kind of expected to pop back up again. Hey, he was an angel for most of his life. You've gotta figure the rules are different. The second, was a surprise and that leads to the caveat. Mr. Thad pointed out that it's possible they'll mess with this character next season, since he died while a demon was in possession of his soul. If this happens, then I won't feel cheated. If it doesn't, then his death will be more like Trusty's in Lady and the Tramp - a cheap way to tear-jerk the audience.

The last death? Well, as soon as they said they were doing a sixth season, I didn't think this guy would stay dead, so I'm not cheated at all. I do think they're going to mess with us, however. I'm looking forward to it.

Frankly? After this, I'll follow the author's anywhere they want to take me in the SPN universe. They've got my undivided attention. Now, I'm not saying they can't lose me, but for right now? I'm in!

I love the second blue and white dress. And I didn't even have to look at the URL to know they were from Trashy Diva (my favorite place to buy dresses ever).

I'm torn between the two blue polka-dotted dresses, although I have a thing for belts and artistic fabric drapery. The second one has a more authentically classic look. IT'S A HARD DECISION. Argh.

Also, I think the yellow one would look great on you. I just have a bias against the color yellow on clothing, so don't mind me.

My eyebrows raised a bit at the Arizona story as well. Then like a good netizen I did some digging and I found a few interesting bits.

    1. He provided a CDL , and told them what his SSN is. This is all he provided as per every story I have found. Specifically his wife said she had to bring his social security card along with the birth certificate. He did not have the card on him.

Ok, first off - and this is a sore spot for me - the SSN is not, nor was it ever intended to be a form of ID. It says so on the card. Yada yadda you cant get a cell phone / loan / etc without it. I know all wrong stuff. Still he did not have the card on him and he just told them what his SSN is. anyone could make up a number, or give a name that matches the number. This does not count as ID.

His CDL should have been enough - as per Arizona state law you must have a drivers license of some kind in order to be issued an Arizona CDL. ( http://www.dot.state.az.us/mvd/faqs/scripts/FAQsResponse.asp?Category=4 ). So why did he not have that license with him?

On the other hand, from the sample I looked at , the Arizona CDL has a photograph on it. I know that as per the not enacted yet new law , a drivers license is supposed to be prima face proof of citizenship , but I did not see anything about a CDL.

So what it looks like to me is insufficient ID, and the incorrect expectation that being able to recite ones SSN is good enough to prove who are who you say you are.

Failing to have any other proof of ID on you , the birth certificate is the next best thing. I have to dig through boxes of stuff for mine this week because I'm required to show it for employment. It's nothing special. I had to show it when I had my drivers license flipped too - which is most likely why a drivers license is considered proof of citizenship.

I think it's a little hasty to scream racism, and profiling just yet. I'm not saying that is was absolutely not a factor at all, nor am I saying its not a possibility - but I think that it's too soon to start declaring that all it was was racial profiling and nothing else. I'm sure that there is more to this story than what is being handed out by both sides - as teh state is being tight lipped while they investigate. What I find suspect is that they did not talk about any paperwork relating to the vehicle he was driving - registration , insurance, etc.

this is in the front of my mind recently as I am applying for new jobs and have to go through quite a bit of paperwork and ID hoops myself right now.
