Three words about Ovo: omnisexual bug porn. One more word? AWESOME. Also, adorable food juggling ants! I know a lot of people who are sort of cynical about Cirque, but it's really, really different in person than if you've watched it on TV. It is funny and sexy and often fairly tense (there's always one trick you expect to have a net or a safety rope that doesn't and *shudder*).

On the way home last night Patty and I walked by a crime scene just after the police had arrived. Someone was stabbed or shot or hit by a car or something as he was bleeding out of his mouth and I think his head in general, and they pulled some guy off of him, but was saying that that dude, they pulled off was the victim, so maybe there was a self defense thing? I dunno, but it was bad. Bad bad bad.

My regular gig only pays us once a month, so it's always exciting to replenish the savings (especially after buying plane tickets to London and Atlanta), get some bills paid and have a little splurge. I've been to Cirque a few times when it's come to Sydney, and I agree -- it's definitely something you have to see live. I don't think I'd be interested in seeing it on television.

I absolutely love how androgynous many of the performers are; it really forces one to face the assumptions one makes when gendering people.

I saw a screening of Splice courtesy of Fangoria Magazine. Definitely not splattergore, though there are bloody parts and a few parts that made me cringe in my seat going "ew ew ew!" But good performances in general, and definitely a thinking person's horror film, rather than the usual. Though I'm not much of a horror film person--I went because it was free and David Hewlett was in it!

Met the director after, and he was kind enough to sign the DVD cover of Nothing for me!

Why do they do this with trailers? To judge from that review, it sounds as though the people who want to see the film as advertised might be bored, while the people who would actually enjoy the film are being turned off by the ads.

I'd read you Angel fic! I haven't read fic in a while (and when I did, it was mostly Angel/Spike), but it sounds awesome. I know how it is, though -- the only fic comms I belong to are Torchwood ones, so on the occasion that I write something else, I don't know what to do with it.

What I've seen sounds interesting, but I'm also exceptionally dubious, since I've seen far too many films that sound interesting and in fact start off being complex and wonderful devolve into simplistic gore spattered morality tales by the 2nd half of the film, and I have no interest in such films.

If you want to get super technical, actually the Committee just voted to not vote on the org's application (the US had called for a vote and Egypt then called for a motion of no action on THAT vote, which effectively kept the application alive in the Committee) but yeah, the end result is that unless it's brought to a higher level it will languish in the Committee until the end of time (the org's application has been in the Committee, which meets twice a year, for over three years at this point), all the while being asked offensive, homophobic questions. Before calling for the motion of no action the Egyptian delegate made the absolutely intentional and snide remark that the organization had not answered its questions in a "straight" manner. I saw Ovo in San Francisco in January, and you're right, it was awesome. The thing about seeing it live is that you're frequently certain that a trick has just failed, and then it somehow works. So many times during the trapeze act I was thinking 'shit, there is no way he can make that', and then he would.

At the end, when all the acrobats are jumping and diving and doing crazy flips into the net, the last guy just dove forward, did a half rotation, and landed on his back. This being at the end of 2 hours of Cirque, I thought, 'huh, that wasn't very impressive.' Then he stood up, and his arms were the size of my thighs, or possibly my head. Then I understood; he wasn't there to look impressive, he was there to make sure that no one ever slipped.
