  • Three words about Ovo: omnisexual bug porn. One more word? AWESOME. Also, adorable food juggling ants! I know a lot of people who are sort of cynical about Cirque, but it's really, really different in person than if you've watched it on TV. It is funny and sexy and often fairly tense (there's always one trick you expect to have a net or a safety rope that doesn't and *shudder*).

  • On the way home last night Patty and I walked by a crime scene just after the police had arrived. Someone was stabbed or shot or hit by a car or something as he was bleeding out of his mouth and I think his head in general, and they pulled some guy off of him, but was saying that that dude, they pulled off was the victim, so maybe there was a self defense thing? I dunno, but it was bad. Bad bad bad.

  • Someone on the street called me faggot today. It's hard to know what to do with that when you're me, but uncool.

  • Payday! My regular gig only pays us once a month, so it's always exciting to replenish the savings (especially after buying plane tickets to London and Atlanta), get some bills paid and have a little splurge. Also, need to book the hotels for the UK now as well. And the trains, which means I have to make that decision.

  • I am hoping to write my next [livejournal.com profile] kink_bingo story this weekend. Which I think is going to be Angel and is going to be narrated by Lorne and may not contain any actual sex. I don't know. I also won't even know where to post that other than here. Does anyone read Angel fic anymore?

I've been to Cirque a few times when it's come to Sydney, and I agree -- it's definitely something you have to see live. I don't think I'd be interested in seeing it on television.

I absolutely love how androgynous many of the performers are; it really forces one to face the assumptions one makes when gendering people.

I always wonder what exactly people hope to accomplish by yelling that at strangers on the street. [livejournal.com profile] ironchefjoe gets that a lot when he wears a utilikilt. It seems like they are just looking for an outlet for their hate.

Yeah, it confounds me as well.

Then again, I don't understand why men wolf-whistle, either. It's not exactly going to get them into bed with the girl, so what's the point?

I saw a screening of Splice courtesy of Fangoria Magazine. Definitely not splattergore, though there are bloody parts and a few parts that made me cringe in my seat going "ew ew ew!" But good performances in general, and definitely a thinking person's horror film, rather than the usual. Though I'm not much of a horror film person--I went because it was free and David Hewlett was in it!

Met the director after, and he was kind enough to sign the DVD cover of Nothing for me!

I'm not a horror film person either, but Patty is. I dislike splatter and I thought I was going to die during 28 Days Later my chest was hammering so hard. But I love smart horror films like that (28 Days Later is one of my favorite films, period), so I'm tempted.

Why do they do this with trailers? To judge from that review, it sounds as though the people who want to see the film as advertised might be bored, while the people who would actually enjoy the film are being turned off by the ads.

Because films that don't clearly fit into genres (as this one seems to be an example of) don't tend to do well.

I enjoyed it, and yes, there are some jump-worthy parts as well as truly creepy bits. I don't know you well enough to say that you would definitely like it, but you might! If you do see it, I'd love to hear your take on it.

The poll up on the page about the woman being fired for being too attractive pisses me off.
"Do you think Debrahlee Lorenzana's sexy curves led to her firing from Citigroup?
    * Yes, a body like that would keep plenty of people from working
    * No, Lorenzana is good looking, but her claims seem outrageous
    * She ought to come work at my company!"

No choice for "Yes, because people are sexist assholes."

The poll is what I came here to scream about, too. I saw that poll, and I was trying to find the option that best suited my own opinion, but all I saw was:
    • It's entirely just and proper to fire sexy women like her
    • She's not nearly as hot as she thinks she is; she got fired for some other reason and is making excuses (i.e., "she's vain and lazy and she should stay fired")
    • Let's all ogle pretty women at my workplace, yay!

And there are people who claim that sexism isn't a major factor in workplaces or society any more? Holy crap, my face nearly fell of once I finished parsing that quiz.

Good, god, the article itself is horrible. These are the first two paragraphs and every image of her has a 'link to more photos of Lorenzana'.

A Latina lovely says her bosses at Citigroup canned her for flaunting her ample assets at a midtown bank.

Dangerously curvy Debrahlee Lorenzana contends her ex-bosses at Citibank in the Chrysler Building banned her from wearing sexy outfits or heels deemed "too distracting" for male coworkers.

If this article is supposed to be about sexualizing someone who's just trying to do her job, it's off to a crappy start.

I saw what I think was the first US tour of the Circ years ago and loved it. The next I saw (the Spanish themed one) not so much and the one whose name I forgot that was all about ghosts and death and dreams was spectacular.

Sorry about the obnoxious behavior. It's always a huge pain in the ass to go to the gay bars or the drag queen bar here on summer weekends cause the … dunno, frat folks seem to spend their nights getting drunk and driving around the area to shout epithets and occasionally throw things (I still don't know and don’t want to know, what the white gunk some upstanding young college boy threw from a moving car onto my face was).

I'm sorry some jackass called you that. Uncool is putting it mildly. And I have possibly just been unfair to donkeys, who, if they could talk, would most likely do no such thing.

Here are the BtVS/AtS comms I have to hand. I've not been active in either fandom lately, so I can't say how busy they are anymore. Also, if there are any AtS-only comms, I'm not aware of them.

[livejournal.com profile] ats_btvs_fanfic, [livejournal.com profile] buffy_fanfic, [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr (only works if your fic fits the current prompt, but if it does and you post, then there's voting for shiny banners), and [livejournal.com profile] su_herald is the main BtVS/AtS newsletter.

I'd read you Angel fic! I haven't read fic in a while (and when I did, it was mostly Angel/Spike), but it sounds awesome. I know how it is, though -- the only fic comms I belong to are Torchwood ones, so on the occasion that I write something else, I don't know what to do with it.

I am intrigued by reviews of Splice, which seem to indicate it is a quite different film than the one it is being advertised as.

What I've seen sounds interesting, but I'm also exceptionally dubious, since I've seen far too many films that sound interesting and in fact start off being complex and wonderful devolve into simplistic gore spattered morality tales by the 2nd half of the film, and I have no interest in such films.

If you want to get super technical, actually the Committee just voted to not vote on the org's application (the US had called for a vote and Egypt then called for a motion of no action on THAT vote, which effectively kept the application alive in the Committee) but yeah, the end result is that unless it's brought to a higher level it will languish in the Committee until the end of time (the org's application has been in the Committee, which meets twice a year, for over three years at this point), all the while being asked offensive, homophobic questions. Before calling for the motion of no action the Egyptian delegate made the absolutely intentional and snide remark that the organization had not answered its questions in a "straight" manner. I saw Ovo in San Francisco in January, and you're right, it was awesome. The thing about seeing it live is that you're frequently certain that a trick has just failed, and then it somehow works. So many times during the trapeze act I was thinking 'shit, there is no way he can make that', and then he would.

At the end, when all the acrobats are jumping and diving and doing crazy flips into the net, the last guy just dove forward, did a half rotation, and landed on his back. This being at the end of 2 hours of Cirque, I thought, 'huh, that wasn't very impressive.' Then he stood up, and his arms were the size of my thighs, or possibly my head. Then I understood; he wasn't there to look impressive, he was there to make sure that no one ever slipped.
