OH MY GOD, WE JUST STARTED ANGEL S4!

Wesley and Lilah. Holy crap Wesley and Lilah and then Justine was kneeling and gagged in his closet?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

And I guess, amongst the many things (and there are many) I'm startled by here, I must say the following:

- ya sort of get the impression that Wes is a really good lay.
- ya also sort of get the impression that Wes really, really likes sex and it often makes him damn stupid.
- man, what is it with Joss Whedon shows and the oral sex? (Not that I've a problem with that, but I'm amused by it as it's a notable tic in the way both Buffy and Angel construct sex scenes).

So where are the fic recs that treat Wesley like the batshit crazy, ruthless, fantastic fuck he apparently is and not the poor little insecure woobie Angel has to keep reassuring about whether or not he's attractive most of fandom seems to think he is?

Hot fucking damn.

To recap: Wesley. Lilah. Justine. Closet. Gag. Extended speechifying about the nature of slavery. OH MY GOD ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

Heh. Oh, Season 4, Season 4.

Wesley is HARDCORE, isn't he?

I &hearts Wesley/Lilah. I mean, I loved Wes/Gunn like nobody's business, but then there was the throat slitting, and the not giving a damn, and... but there's something fabulous about Wesley/Lilah, there really is.

And, yes, he keeps Justine in his closet, and threatens to take her bucket away. Because he is HARDCORE. Batman level hardcore.

I think Batman would be a little scared of Wes. Though he would never show it. Or admit it.

...fuck, now I want Batman/S4 Wes fic.

And angelic!Cordelia taking the piss out of things! :-D

I watched that season about a month ago. Heck of a whirlwind, story-wise. Looking forward to your further reactionizing.

with the others, I've been waiting to hear your reaction on this one. :D

though I will say, this is the season that finally cured me of Angel as a show, the way season 7 did for Buffy. There were too many moments (and this right here is a big one for me) where I was like, this is so far out of the original character arc, that I now consider them a plot tool, because someone is 'playing barbies' with them ("Hey, what if we make them do this?"), rather than writing a consistent character...

And the thing is, the character development in a straight line from S3 Buffy is completely believable. And totally inevitable.

ya sort of get the impression that Wes is a really good lay.

Oh, yeah.

Oh, agreed. Want something really weird? Watch Wesley's first appearance as the not-Giles fail!Watcher, then watch season four of Angel. It's like a whole different person, and yet, I really never felt like his character was derailed at all. It's a natural progress.

Which is pretty sad for Wes, given the places he goes as a character. But lovely for us viewers!

Ha! From "This would perhaps be Faith?" to "I'll take away your bucket."

LOVE.

Exactly! I watched those two episodes back to back last week (with a brief detour for the Faith-Wes torture scene), and oh man, it was so trippy. You can do it with Cordelia's arch too, those not as easily, what with some of the ... weird stuff that happens with her.

I think Wesley's character development over the course of Buffy and Angel is one of the best--if not the very best, imo--of any character on any show I've ever seen.

Spike is probably at #2 for me.

I agree 100%. Cordelia may be a close second for me, and for many of the same reasons. Both of these characters start out basically as caricatures, and take really complex journeys. And both basically end up as different people than they started out as, which is a natural progression in human development. Wesley is far more realistic though, and Cordy maybe didn't get as dark (but that's arguable).

Oh ho ho, I was waiting for this. The kink meme was made for this pair, I swear to god. I think they've canonically done half the things on your bingo card. And it's really hot.

Hm, fic recs, fic recs. I'm sure I can wrassle up a couple. Wes almost never comes off as Woobie-esque in Wes/Lilah fics, that's for sure. You looking for something sexy, or more PG?

HAH!!! finally, you get here! srsly, there is MUCH MORE in store for wesley and you are going to... react in many ways to it!

re: the oral sex thing - i think it's... an easy visual to imply, more than many other things, without actually *showing* it in any detail, with strategic placements here and there, you know?

My first reaction to s4 Wesley's tone of voice was "this man has turned into my kind of scary."

"I'll take away your bucket" never ceases to send just the right kind of shivers down my spine.

Have to comment because I was talking about this very arc recently. Wesley is one of those characters that Joss does so well, in my opinion. The kind that you never saw coming, but the psychology is sound. Wesley has had some shitty things happen to him since we've met him, that plus allusions to some sketchy adolescent experiences makes for a realistically fucked up character. And I just love love Love *how* dark he gets. It's like someone's popped his cork and he's just bubbling over (insert innuendo if desired) with badness. AND he seems to revel in it, which makes so deliciously twisted. It's as if he recognizes that he is SO discontent, and decides see how just far he can take it. And yeah, W/L is fucked in the head, but works for me on every level.

Now I need to go back and re-watch. Dark!Wesley is so much sexier than Fail!Wesley (much like Dark!Willow v. Innocent!Willow).

Jane St. Clair's Restaurant Dogs series, Wes/Gunn. Set before S4, but I think it fits the bill. Here's the index page for her Angel fics (scroll down for this series) and the first story, Chaparral.

The way that Wes' character develops is gut wrenching, but so good. When we first started watching Angel, I thought, "Oh man, this blows, this poor shmuck's always gotta be comic relief" but the way they flesh him out is very satisfying, I think.

I love Wes' story arc and just and just how dark it gets. I'll say it's the best character development of Angel. He's so broken but manages to keep going and keep caring on certain levels.

Wes and Lilah are delicious together.

Very late, I know, but oh, this is the best season opener. Possibly ever. :)

(S4 is like a novel btw - apart from the odd, almost-stand-alone, it's all arc. I'm curious to see how you like it, because it tends to divide people.)
