wish

I really want someone to do a completely earnest, dramatic, epic, not-silly, big-budget steampunk film so there can be a ballroom scene in which people in FABULOUS clothes waltz to the waltazable parts of Blades in Autumn.

This is, in part, probably because I suspect said film would be the closest I'd ever see on screen to some of the shit Kali and I were messing with in Descensus. No one really makes fantastical films that are as dark, serious and political as I want. Ever.

Also, I love this song SO HARD.

What about, crap, *digs through brain* um.... *digs through internet* Pan's Labyrinth? Just in terms of dark, serious fantasy. Mostly this reminded me of desperately wanting to be in the ballroom scene in Labyrinth. I want Brian Froud to design my life.

Yes! That comes very close for me, although there's the real world and the possibly real world divide. And I just want stuff that's like that set in an entirely fictional and highly costumed world, and it's just not there. See also: geez, why does everyone who makes a movie of Dune totally ruin it?

Funnily enough, I recall that HR Giger was originally hired for the visual design of a movie of Dune - which eventually got made without his imagery.

I wondered if the problem with the movie of 'Dune' that I saw (the extended director's cut of the Lynch version) was that it was too close to the novel?

Oh I want films like that too, both because I want to look at them and because I want to BE in them. I love the world you fall into with amazing lush clothing choices.

Muwahaha! So true! I always thought Lynch's movie could have been better as a mini-series, with current special effects technology (and sans voice overs *cringe*) it could have been a better interpretation.

The whole blonde muscled Paul of the newer mini-series really upset me. He's supposed to look like a runt! Not an Aryan ideal!

Oy, the voiceover. For me, one of the worst moments in that regard is when Jessica sees Paul alive after facing the gom jabbar and in V.O. we get "My son...lives!"

1. WE KNOW THAT, WE CAN SEE HIM RIGHT THERE.

2. The actress had already sold that moment of fear giving way to relief and awe with her silent reaction after opening the door.

I guess Lynch was trying to reproduce the many, many, many interior monologues of the books. At least he didn't keep the characters' tendency to preface everything with "Ahhh..."

Like if The Golden Compass movie had been any good.

Exactly.

"completely earnest"

That's it. That's what it is about you that makes me like you.

:-)

Umm, not steampunk by any means, but it's fantastical, dark, serious and political in equal measure, and it has amazing musical sequences.

You're a writer -- write a screenplay? Of course, it would need a plot, but details, details. :)
