New Duchess shirts have arrived. Despite the HORRIBLE heat, I have attempted to try them on and photograph them for you.

This was only quasi-successful. Do not comment on my hair. I'm getting it cut. ASAP. I was already on that page, and then saw it with the suit and was like "aaaaargh! aaaaaargh! aaaaaargh!" it's just been too hot to wear them all summer, so I had not realized.

My initial feeling that the collars were different seems to be mostly wrong, although they do seem a little less deep. Mostly though, it's just that they don't have collar stays in them right now (and I shot these with a lack of collar stays, so the lines aren't perfect).

Real pictures when I wear these things for real and I'm not holding the damn camera myself and it's not too hot to bind (which is also mucking up the lines, but jeez, it's like 90 in our apartment) and I'm not showing off the epic circles I get under my eyes because of celiac.

However:





WE ARE NOT DISCUSSING MY HAIR (look, I just got out of the shower, okay). The purple is much louder than this picture would lead you to believe. However, I can work with this; the tie had a significantly subduing influence. That is Patty's nail polish basket behind my head.




Can you tell this is the blue with the stripe here? Probably not. Maybe in the second photo? But it is gorgeous. GORGEOUS. It's the shirt Jack would wear on a date -- that perfect shade of blue, but fancy. I've got tie combos picked out for it, but I kinda just had to go with it like that for you. And yes, that's a Beanie Baby inch worm behind my head.




Meanwhile, I could not get the pink to photograph at all. Here, look at my awesome spitfire cufflinks instead. But the pink is vibrant and texture-y, and if you're at all like I am about texture, you'll just want to touch it lots and lots.

I'll do another picture attempt when I'm not trying to do laundry and covered in sweat.

I love the tousled humid look (always on other people, my hair near heat is, well, terrifying).

I love the purple, but I love purple in any incarnation. I think I would really like the pink though, I am a huge texture person. @____@ I should really make copies out of the tailoring book from the library.

wow...those look great! I liked the shirts so much I looked up the Duchess site and now I want a suit! Guess I'll have to call to find ballpark prices. Are these all custom made?

Yup. Their Scotch Basic line has suits starting at $500 for 2 pieces and $650 for three pieces, butit's easy to spend a lot more (you don't even want to know what my tux cost).

I don't actually know what their standard shirt price is because sometimes the do a special that's 3 for $300 or free shirt with suit or whatever, and er, sometimes I wind up with extra snazzy discounts.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have to go to the tailor in person? Or can you just get your measurements and then send those to Duchess? Do the suits end up fitting well on women too? That's outside what I can afford at the moment but it seems like a good price for a custom-made suit. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Hopefully they'll still be in business next time I go shopping for a suit.

They have a measurement guide for doing the measurements yourself. Mine were measured by them on a trip of theirs to New York, but I do know people who have done it all remotely.

For mine we talked a lot about how to cut the suit to minimize my hips, disguise my slight shoulders, etc, because I wanted a really masculine fit and had thought about the ways my body does and doesn't conform to that. I know they have a number of other female-bodied clients who have similar fit issues, so I imagine they quite have the hang of it.

I also have seen their mens suits on women who are not interested in disguising their figure and know they actually make women's style pieces as well, although I've not seen those.
