Junior high is that age bracket where anyone who fits comfortably in a box (or is trying desperately to, anyway) assumes that the world is simple, and that they've got it all figured out. Anything that deviates from those assumptions is met with scorn and derision because, boo!, it's scary, thinking, innit?
I mean, I was a huge, huge asshole when I was 13, and probably regularly offended people on public transit by talking about the glamorous life I was only pretending to have, but porn?????? and "Is that a boy or a girl?" and trying to look at my crotch from all discernible angles to figure it out?????? I was NEVER that much of an asshole.
Two things: 1) I'm very glad you followed up with the school - hopefully they will work on educating their students. I'm curious if you receive any follow up from them.
Under "Media" the clip of "Have you done this before?" is all about this. The whole song isn't there, but their album is on iTunes. I *love* it. And I'm not just saying that because I'm friends with the band. Enjoy!
Damn, it would almost HAVE to, after that. Even just running into junior high kids watching pron on a portable DVD who DON'T remark on one's gender would be an improvement.
I've had the whole "are you a boy or a girl" thing done to me before, about 9 or 10 years back when I was still figuring out my gender identity and crossdressing. Sadly, I see that people are still assholes. It seems the only thing that has changed is that now the assholes have portable DVD players. And porn. This was not the kind of change I was hoping for. :(
Sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you wrote that email.
I'm sorry that happened to you and am really glad that you followed up with the school. I, too, would be curious to know if you hear back from them at all...
Dear god, teenagers cannot function in social arenas without being utter ass-holes.
Serves those little sip-shits right. I approve of the "Death Glare".
I witnessed a similar incident about a year ago and I was actually sitting across from the person who was being verbally harassed and I just smiled at hir, hoping I was some kind of moral support, but I was too much of a coward to actually speak up :(
The kids got very, very quiet in their assholery after two rounds of me looking them in the eye until they look away. I'm shit at being an alpha with dogs, but thankfully with humans it's usually not a problem.
