  • Patty and I are having a nice domestic morning. This is really the first one we've had since she's been back and really since she left for Cardiff, since it was too dark and cold in Cardiff for us to even putter about comfortably.

  • Plans for various things are shaping up. Patty has to make a post before I can tell you some of that (and there's still some info we don't quite have), but we do know I'll be joining Patty in Columbus on December 26th and we'll be returning on January 3. We don't drive, so are somewhat at the mercy of the schedules and graces of others, but if I've dropped you a note ever about us trying to meet up at some point, this is the timeframe.

  • We also know that in May we're doing a Regency weekend in Essex and a wedding in Pittsburgh at the end of that month. I suspect France will be in August.

  • I had the oddly nice experience of getting off my ass and sending NCIS my scholarly accomplishments for 2010 and it was actually sort of awesome. I did stuff! I have more stuff in the pipeline (OH GOD, I NEED TO WATCH ALL OF SJA)! I should update my CV.

  • I am very, very excited for Tron: Legacy. The score and the bleakness alone have me very excited, even if everyone is saying that the script is truly terrible. Unfortunately Patty has aggressive negative interest in seeing this one, so it's me on my own next week.

  • Now we are getting ready to go to the farmer's market and Eataly before we join a friend for her birthday and a night of 20s dancing.

  • Almost, Maine was a flop in New York. But it's having one hell of a healthy life elsewhere.

  • Can airports be fun? I had the horror recently of realizing I enjoy airport time. I suppose I'd have to (am assuming at least 6 RTs for me in the next 12 months, know that could easily go up to 9 or more -- I don't like being away from home for long stretches, but I love spending a bit of time on the road).

  • Urban forager: burdock.

  • So brilliant I wish I'd thought of it: Far from Heaven to be musical.

  • Last night we jumped back on the Angel bandwagon and watched "Harm's Way." There's only one thing you need to know: OH MY GOD I LOVE HARMONY SO MUCH. Also, I want a Harmony/Ianto bitching about their crappy jobs that take them for granted and their awful bosses with swoopy coats fic. Pleeeeeeease?

If you don't mind seeing it with someone who's going for a second viewing, I'll totally see Tron with you. My Christmas plans look to be mostly smoothed out; I'm awaiting an email from my brother.

The airport article is very smart.

I've actually always liked airports, and while I know this is the privilege of traveling out of New York, I've always found those airports fairly well-appointed. You know, minus a couple terminals. (I'm looking at you, AirTran in LGA.)

I guess since it has been almost ten years since the 9/11 attacks, it's just about time for airport design to catch up with passenger needs.

    OH!

And I've been meaning to show "Harm's Way" to Josh ever since he started talking about running a Vampire campaign. It seems like the perfect example of "Masquerade" and the trials and tribulations thereof. You know, except Harmony didn't have to hide her vampirism.

Oh yeah, let's go. When are you around?

I like JFK a lot. LGA is less fun and less meeting my needs as someone with dietary restrictions and difficulty with heavy objects, but it's also RIGHT NEAR MY HOUSE, so it's fine. LAX is still my most hated airport, followed by Zurich for different reasons. Atlanta's good, Chicago's good, SFO is fine, Heathrow is fine, even Fiumenca is fine. LAX IS SUCH SHIT.

I'm up from the 21st - 27th, probably in Jersey the night of the 25th, maybe back in NYC the 26th, but definitely back in Jersey the evening of the 27th. (Josh and I fly home from Philly.)

Once I hear back from my brother, I'll have a much clearer sense of things, but I imagine an afternoon viewing on the 24th might work best.

Austin's airport is surprisingly nice. They have lots of food options, and they push the "Keep Austin Weird" from the get-go.

It's also designed in an aesthetically pleasing way, which is nice. The wifi situation could be better, though.

Philly is big and daunting, but one of the gift shops had a whole "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" section, which utterly blew my mind. And $25. (I couldn't leave without buying a Flipadelphia shirt.)

Heathrow is just gorgeous, and will always be one of my favorites because Bacardi had a promotion going on and they gave me free booze while I was headed to my gate.

LAX, as you say, is pants.

I kind of love airports. Not when I'm travelling with other people, because then I have to worry and make sure we all stay together and get where we're going, but when I'm alone. I like buying a trashy magazine because there's nothing else in the tiny bookshops, I like sitting on the ground next to a power outlet with my laptop, I like eating over-priced airport food (or my own made/brought snacks if I'm feeling thrifty) and watching the planes take off and land. I love walking on moving sidewalks. But mostly I just love going places, and airports are full of people going places.

I empathized a lot more with Harmony after getting a job similar to her Season 5 job, but for (SO glad about this) a non-evil company. It's a demanding company and an often demanding job, but I can handle it. So could Harmony, eventually.

(Wait a minute: what did she do for work after the series finale? I'm blanking on that.)

I also love airports, althought I don't travel my air nearly as much. I do travel by car much more frequently and have similar feelings about truck stops :)

Also, since I failed at making it to NYC in August as planned, if you two have any free time in Pittsburgh we should meet up. If there's anything you'd like to do/see/eat I'm happy to play tour guide :) Will you be coming in via air or train? Depending on where you need to go for the wedding the train station may be better located for you. Also, omg you're coming to my city wheeeeee!

I've just woken up, and am feeling rather silly, but am totally stoked to see you visiting my city and would love to meet up with you.

I was recently surprised to realize that I kinda like airports, too. Which was a surprise because traveling makes my partner very anxious and so traveling with him can be kind of stressful, and since I travel mostly with him, my brain is all travel = stress. But then, that might be part of it, too--once we're at the airport I can start to relax, and there's nothing else to do but do those things that you can only do in airports.

However, if I'm having a stressful or long travel experience and I need to eat and I'm at an airport that doesn't have anything I'd consider eating, then I hate airports.

RDU's new terminal is an absolute delight, especially with the comfy chairs, plentiful outlets, and delicious oyster bar.

With TRON- remember it's a disney movie, and it's not aimed at us adult folk per-se. That's something people are forgetting when it comes to the script. Also, the first film was pretty horrific with the script, and incredibly vague with the plot (I re-watched prior to seeing the new film). I will say there were a few lines from the original which I wish had been in the new film (or had been there more). There were also a few joke lines which I felt would have been fun, but they would have ruined the sense of the film so I totally understand why they forwent the Disney tradition of pulling lines from other movies as homage.

I had the horror recently of realizing I enjoy airport time.

I love airports -- I think part of it is simply the association with travelling, which is one of my Favourite Things, but there are also so many stories associated with airports and when you're at the airport, there's the chance to see a little part of the stories of others highlighted in a way that you wouldn't in the street -- airports are places of transition, they are places where relationships begin, end, and change; they are places where people go on the way to becoming someone else.

I find it easy to make stories in airports, observing the people there and making stories for them in my own mind.

Airports are better than airplanes, that's fershure. I'm in CO at the moment, flying out of DEN on Monday, and it's a pretty nice place, I have to admit. Am about to make my first acquaintance of MEM on my way to DFW, however. I can only hope the latter is better than it used to be. But the winner, in my recent experience, is the new DTW, mentioned in the article.

I love airport time. It's the only place I can be in a crowd and never get nervous, just relax and people-watch from my no-one-wants-to-interact-while-traveling bubble. It feels completely detached from the normal flow of time and life for me, which is soothing.

I am reliably informed that I'm in New York from about 5pm on the 5th to about 10pm on the 8th, so functionally available on the 6th and 7th. If you're around, it would be cool.

I have always rather liked airports, and to a lesser extent, train stations and similar places. They're neither here nor there, they're international and universal, timeless and yet wedded to clocks, and they exist in their own special social structure. But I have always liked in-between places and transport, and sort of grew up in them.

Tron:Legacy was fascinating; the director seemed to consciously be modeling it after Inception in certain places.
