Situation in Egypt: http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/01/whats-happening-egypt-explained
This may prove to be the second in a string of events started by Tunisia. Protests are happening in Yemen now too and on a smaller scale in Libya and Lebanon. What the outcome of the Egypt situation ultimately is should be clear within the next 48 hours. The Yemen thing could also be huge. Not sure about the other two.

Who's surprised? No one. But you should know they are going there.

This has been the longest three news weeks of my damn life.

Technically, when I turned 18, I was supposed to officially declare my US citizenship. I never bothered because I've always had a US passport.

Now I wonder if I'd still be scrutinized in Arizona.

OTOH, I'm more likely to be given a pass than Juan and Maria, even as US citizens because I'm not brown enough.

*sigh* living in AZ is pretty miserable right now, as someone who doesn't agree with the state leadership. Gaah.

Thank you for the Egypt link. I've been sick and not online a lot this week, and that definitely helped me to piece together the info I've been seeing in bits and pieces.

It looks like the Tumblr link is cribbed from http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/01/whats-happening-egypt-explained, which has been updated further. (I was busy being impressed by something of quality on Tumblr (either Tumblr has a bad signal-to-noise ratio or I'm terrible at coming across the could stuff), then realised it was from Mother Jones.)

Fucking Arizona. I'm somewhat curious if I'd be in their class of non-citizens (from that article, it's a toss up--if you're going to try to get rid of birthright citizenship, you could at least bother defining who you think is a citizen). Because, damn it, I am an American and the point of birthright citizenship is that I'm worth as much as the people descendent from pilgrims or whatever, no matter what kids told me in school.

Yup, I caught that a few moment before you and have switched it! I don't get Tumblr either -- someone else passed me the link.

I hope things go well (and as non-violently as possible) Mubarak is a thug and it's well past time for the Egyptian people to do better. I remember Sadat - it was definitely a sad day when he was killed.

Btw, why would popular revolution in Yemen be bigger news than ones in Egypt or Tunisia?

As for Arizona, I'm 80% certain that the Supreme Court would either not hear the case or rapidly toss it out, but the fact that I'm not more certain horrifies me.

I'm saying the Yemen ting could turn into revolution. It's less likely that whatever is happening in Libya and Lebanon will. Also if Egypt and Yemen succeed all bets are off about the rest of the region. Three is the magic number for momentum.

The situation in Lebanon has very little to do with what's going on in North Africa, as that began quite a few weeks before Tunisia and also "it's Tuesday", Lebanon has always been much more volatile and unstable than Tunisia and Egypt which have been/are long term dictatorships.

Yemen is definitely affected by what's going on in North Africa.

Thanks you for mentioning this.
