Surprise night-shift yesterday. 3pm - 5am. I'm hoping I'm clear of all that now. Misery.
I AM BUSY FOREVER. Plan: finish Sherlock statistical stuff this week, write first draft this weekend, finish over next week. Then: to all Whoniverse statistical stuff (which isn't as granular for this paper); noodle draft structure at Gally (I'm not even kidding -- let's have drunk academia at LobbyCon) and fix up over the two weeks that I get back. Bang bang. Then everything is in before its respective deadlines. SOMEHOW.
I've sort of used a collection of random filters here to talk about the book Kali and I are working on once or twice, but it's not an effective filter really. Since there are 1,300 of you, saying you want to be on that filter isn't a guarantee, but if you're interested let me know -- as there are definitely people who I know that I haven't put on it because maybe they don't care and I have issues or whatever? No excerpts for now probably, because we're being relatively deliberate about pre-readers (our cheerleaders) and then who we want to be our first critical readers (we haven't told you yet, but we do want you). But sometimes I just need to noodle aloud about the process and the world. This is, in sort, not the sort of fantasy novel where you go "I want to live there!" It's the sort of fantasy novel that after you stop longing for the all the beauty in it you go, "shit, I already live here, and it's a terrible place." INCOHERENCE IS INCOHERENT.
All I can do right now it seems is think about LA. It will be warmer. There is In-and-Out Burger. I will be threatened by a Dalek. Will get copies of antho I"m in. Silly, silly times with some of my favorite people who I rarely see. Some biz excitement. Mostly, though, In-and-Out burger.
ETA: I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT LOS ANGELES QUESTION. Since I'm leaving the bubble this year -- are there See's Candies shops in LA where you can choose your own mix as opposed to grabbing the pre-packaged boxes?
Also, I just found this fic in wordstrings's series. This. This exact thing. DON'T MAKE ME IDENTIFY WITH SHERLOCK, PEOPLE. It would be a bit not good. I work hard not to have to go there.
IT IS LIKE MY FAVORITE THING EVER AND I ONLY GET IT ONCE A YEAR. My flight lands at like 10:45 and I've told people that we're getting in the car as soon as I get to the hotel so we can go bet In-and-Out before they close at 1. I am not checking luggage so I can be sure this happens.
I'd really like to do an article for the same Sherlock collection, but it's about a course that my colleague and I have designed around various versions of Sherlock Holmes, and students are only just now reading and viewing the texts, so I don't know that we'll be able to meet the deadline.
I want to be on every filter you have and are willing to let me be on.
I find people fascinating and their words fascinating and I like hearing about stuff, and all of that goes double for you, who are intelligent and eloquent and the sort of person I want to be when I grow up.
I like Vegas, but haven't been there in years. SOmetimes I try to convince PAtty we should go, but she doesn't love casinos or things that are tacky or the Rat Pack, so that's a losing battle.
Whatever airport I fly into when I visit my parents, be it LAX, Long Beach or John Wayne, I have all the In-n-Outs plotted out. And I usually strategically try to land around lunch time.
I'm slightly worried because by the time I land and pick up my rental on Weds, it'll be about 3 pm and I'm taking my parents out for Birthday Dinner that evening. Do I ruin my appetite by getting burgers beforehand? OH THE HUGE MANATEE.
Ugh, I hadn't noticed that. I'm always sort of having to dance around this stuff in weird ways because of the whole food restriction makes me choices ore limited, etc. thing. They aren't like evil and handing out anti-gay money though are they?
I'm hard-pressed to think of a filter of yours I wouldn't find interested except for NY meetup logistics, but I am massively interested in your writing filters.
An actual See's shop should let you pick you mix. You can always call ahead, and ask them, and if not, ask them where the closest one is that does... I routinely get a handpicked mix for boyfriend every Christmas.
RE: Book filter: I'm okay either way. I have a friend who is a published author and I see some of her early work and the changes, thinking, etc. I can wait until you are ready for constructive criticism, though. Sometimes it's better to have people, who haven't seen the original work or work in progress, read what you are ready to have critiqued.
I am very interested in being included on your book filter! I love to read, but as I begin to write myself I am finding the background behind the writing to be even more interesting.
