If you're trying to take time out from the news, you may want to skip this, as it is Japan-focused, although the really hard stuff is in articles that I link to and not in the post.

The news from Japan is creating interesting emotional responses in me: my stepfather was highly involved (his button from Oak Ridge was #2) in the Manhattan Project from day one (Fermi recruited him, personally).

I can't begin to express what's been going through my psyche lately; my husband and housemate both think I'm being overly interested in the news, as well as overly emotional about it all.

Yeah. I can't even.

One day I'll be able to write about this.

I know it drives you nuts when people rely on you for the news, but for some of us, the choice is to use our politically engaged friends as a filter or to not even hear about natural disasters. (Or spend all our emotional and physical energy treating the news like a flamewar one can't disengage from, but that didn't work out so well for me, so I stopped.)

Thank you. I have other engaged LJ friends who link, and I do my best to walk from your links to others and round out my perspective, but know that your links are a great help to me.
