Feb. 15th, 2004

Slept too long last night with the heat on and now my face and throat feel swollen. I went out and did a lot of errands, and that helped some, but it's such an unpleasant sensation.

So, clothes are at the dry-cleaners, more resumes are in my hand, gifts acquired and great groceries (including none of the awful things I always but that I shouldn't have, and better containers for bringing my lunch to work more, as it's healthier and cheaper -- as well as the healthy things that I actually like to eat). For me to do all of this by this hour on a Sunday is fairly astounding and is mostly testament to my not having any other time to do it.

Also sat in Shakespeare and company for an hour reading plays and looking for monologues. I came away with nothing, but I suppose that's okay, it's a process, blah blah. But now that I feel ready to attack the monologue work/situation, I can't bloody find anything I connect with. But I suppose if I can make an hour a week (or more) to sit on the floor of a bookshop and read plays, that's a hugely smart bit of work to be doing.

I'm still utterly transfixed by what's going on in San Francisco. Among other things, it's the _momentum_ of it that's so incredible, as well as the bravery of SF's new mayor (a straight, married Catholic man who had been in office only two weeks when he put this thing in motion, and went through with it despite many gay activists trying to tell him it wasn't the right time -- you can read about him here: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/02/15/MNGMN51F8Q1.DTL ). I'm working on putting together a list of link and info on "what can you do" if you support equal marriage rights, and should manage to get that posted later today.

For anyone who isn't already clear, this isn't a gay or straight thing, but a human thing and to deny loving committed individuals the option of the 1,049 federal rights that come with marriage is among other things, insane and insulting.

Anyway, I have a big headache and a raft of data entry work to be doing and a ton of headshots to send out and blah blah blah. But that's life here.
Visit the Human Rights Campaign Fund’s Marriage Center for information on the legal battles occurring on the local, state and national level. Additionally the site include critical FAQ’s on why civil unions aren’t enough and on Marrying in San Francisco. While you’re there, you should Sign the Million for Marriage Petition and consider donating or becoming an HRC member regardless of whether you are gay, straight, queer, bi, trans, somewhere in between or none of the above.

Visit GLAAD to see how the media is or isn’t covering recent events and see what you can do in response.

Are you in Massachusetts? Do you want to support equal marriage in Massachusetts? Visit EqualMarriage.org and see what you can do.

Not all conservatives oppose gay marriage. You should read about that here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/4377797.html

Thanks to the ACLU you can send free faxes to Congress, stating your opposition to a consitutional ammendment banning gay marriage.

Thanks to NOW you can send a printed letter or email to your elected representatives opposing ammending the constitution to ban gay marriage.

Visit Freedom to Marry to see their tips on how to get involved.

Support Lambda Legal. These folks are great. Among other things, they intend to take any legal action necessary to make sure marriage licenses continue to be issued to same-sex couples in San Fran.

Do you have another link for me that’s very new news or a practical, what you can do sort of thing? Please email me, or comment on this post. I will update this entry regularly.
