Solomon and Gaenor
Oct. 1st, 2004 11:01 pmThis has to be the most useless movie review ever, which I am writing solely because it's an act of distancing.
Okay, everyone warned me that Solomon and Gaenor was a big huge cry-fest, but woah. I mean, I write shit that depressing all the time, but watching it is always 800-times worse. I also always forget that while I don't tend to react emotionally to movies with Holocaust themes (in large part because they usually involve so much "this is an important film" stuff that I can distance myself, and additionally, my experience of my family's Judaism is unconnected with the Holocaust, which I suppose is a pretty peculiar thing for an American Jew to say, but to my knowledge (always a critical caveat in my family) we were all here long before that part of history), I do tend to really fall apart when it comes to more personal stories on the Jews and oppression front. And this really pushed my "I am a Jew and that's a big serious heavy thing" buttons, which I assure you, my mother would be shocked to know I have, but I do. Also chicks and babies steadfastly coping with death. And men who sew. And really smart on the symbolic Judaism stuff front. And languages! Yeah. Dude. Cry cry cry cry.
and yeah, okay, those love scenes were scorching, but I've done my penance in tears, thanks y'all
Oi. I should start rating depressing movies based on how many times in a row I have to watch Zoolander after to recover.
