Really an exceptional and timely film. For people knowledgeable about Kinsey there are things in it that may annoy, but it's such a well constructed film filled with so many moments of small grace that it's really one of the loveliest film going experiences I've had in some time.
All the performances are just excellent and Liam Neeson's ability to portray someone who is deeply in need of other people but both immature and puzzled at how to deal with them is really amazing. That said, it's a very subtle performance that I think won't click for everyone. But there is a such a longing to be comfortable with other people in the character, as well as an intellectual frustration with those around him for wasting time... it's quite sharp.
It also meanders into something that's of personal and artistic interest to me, which is the problem of when work is your family and when family is your work. And it wanders into this and polyamory at the same time. And it's just very artful about the ways in which clever people seem to be prone to being both sloppy and greedy. The peace eventually established between the wife and the assistant/boyfriend is note perfect.
There are a large number of small things in this picture that will stick with me for a long time. Also, nearly all the little brief performances by interview subjects are some variation on heartwarming, hillarious or devastating.
It's a must see movie that I wonder if the Academy will be brave enough to even notice. So lovely.
Also, I'm realizing this has just been released in New York and Los Angeles so far, and I know conservative groups have already been making a lot of hostile noise about this film. I think when it goes into wide we can't even anticipate how ugly that's going to get.
