Okay, a spoiler for a future episode of Glee and my speculation below.

So there's this spoiler going around that Kurt and Blaine are going to wind up as students at McKinley before the end of the year.

People are wondering how this is going happen and most people are speculating that Kurt either just wants to go to Nationals or that it'll be his family being able to afford the school.

I'm betting neither.

I'm better Kurt and Blaine get busted making out somewhere/when they shouldn't be at Dalton. Sure, Dalton's relatively cool about that shit, and it would all be fine, BUT, there's the specter of Blaine's dad. I think Blaine's father is going to pull a "I'm not going to pay for you to go there if it's just going to encourage your homosexuality" and Kurt will be all "We can face the horror of McKinley together and we'll be stars and it will be awesome."

What you just said, so much, yes. I wrote a whole huge thing about how "you're usually so Top 40" is a huge signifier of what Blaine allows himself to feel/express, and Kurt's move singing Blackbird is such a New Directions thing - you're not singing for a competition, you're not singing for the team, you're not even necessarily singing for the attention, you're singing for your feelings and for you. Which means that Blaine let himself fall for Kurt - expressed himself TO himself - when Kurt was acting most as himself and at his most emotionally open and real.

So yeah, Blaine's totally rocking a persona - but that persona is so very wrapped up in Dalton, where he definitely feels safe and comfortable but restrained. He has a lot at that school, though. It's not going to be easy to open up to who he really is, though I'm dying to watch Kurt help, and I'm sure a lot of people who aren't reading the broader character arc are going to complain that he's changing characterization at some point.

As someone who had a really intense weird private school experience that was about performing a certain identity (that was very hard for me to perform, but that also includes things that are entirely true to who I am now, which includes a certain dose of elitism and an appreciation of certain "finer things") and then went to public school and was like "this should be easier, but I think I'm going to die from confusion" I'm very curious to see what this transition looks like. Of course, Blaine's story is different, as he came to Dalton from another school -- although other than the bullying, we don't have a context for what that was and if he was always from a world of places like Dalton, or like Kurt, just found a way to wedge himself in there, just more effectively than Kurt did?

There's so much spec on that, the most universal thing being that Blaine's bullying wasn't half of what Kurt's was because the word he used was 'taunted' (which fits Blaine, who needs approval regularly) and he never took physical assault into account when advising Kurt to confront Karofsky. But like, does he come from money? (With the affected accent Darren gives Blaine sometimes, I'd say yes, clearly he could afford Dalton at least.) Was his old school private too? (I have a weird headcanon where he wanted to try something like public school and couldn't handle it and the money just made him more of a target, but I have no idea why I get that feel, I just do.) I really hope they expand on his past at some point, but the show isn't really good about doing that - Kurt, Finn, Quinn and Rachel are pretty much the only ones whose past story or parents we know about and we've never seen Rachel's, we just know they're two men and we met her surrogate mom last season.

Oh god, the accent. That may be why I've just pinged on Blaine so hard. I sound the way I do because of where I was educated. It's not about where I live, it's not about what my parents sound like, it's not something that came of the speech therapy I had for other reasons, it is a old money, private school world thing... it drawls a little. I think it's the thing that makes other people think I sound like I'm a fully of shit, but it just sounds like home to me. Yeah. DUDE.

Random note, but I really think Blaine wouldn't have worked half as well as he does without Darren Criss at the helm - not only does he have exactly the charisma and the I-sing-at-theme-parks enthusiasm, a bit of the endearing attention-whoring, plus a pretty solid understanding of the broader importance of this storyline due to being raised in San Francisco, but all his schooling as he grew up? Schools just like Dalton, which means he'd understand it exactly too. Like I'm sure part of this stuff was also written around him, but it feels like it was all there from the start and just subtle. Either he really brought it to the role through his own personal actor headcanon, or it was just right.

Ah, I knew he was from SF, but I hadn't realized he was a private school kid.
