Rita-watch

There are so bad early signs that Rita is going to be just as fucked up at Katrina, although in a different way.

The biggest problem of course are the people fleeing Houston and the surrounding areas. As we all know traffic has been backed up for hours to, quite frankly, days. Last night cars were only moving at one mile an hour, and lots of people were running out of gas.

Yesterday they wanted to start bringing in tanker trucks along the side of the road to gas up stranded motorists. Today we find out that operation is only beginning today, because the trucks had the wrong nozzle sizes and the right ones had to be flown in.

Trucks will only be giving people enough gas to get to a gas station and fill up -- most of the gas stations along the routes are now out of petrol though, and the trucks report they they expect to run out of gas before they can help everyone stranded, and do not think they will be able to make a second pass.

Cars are not protection from a Category 4 storm (which they say may strengthen again to a Cat 5) and float away easily. The thing starts coming in tonight, and I have no idea how they're going to get people off those roads. Hell, I was in a car once in a a Cat 1 storm, and we started floating off.
