Ghosts (repost), Snape/OFC, 9/48
Rating:
G – hard-R; this chapter G
Author’s Notes:
  • If you don’t know what this is, please read this: http://rm.livejournal.com/727358.html
  • This story was originally written in late-2001; despite a recent tune-up, it is in no way compliant with the current state of the HP universe.
  • Your feedback and commentary are always welcome, even for a time capsule such as this.
  • Each chapter of this story has now been tagged. You can find the whole thing here.
  • If you’re looking for slash, het, poly, Book-6 compliant Slytherin backstory please visit Fascilis Descensus Averno a WIP written with [livejournal.com profile] kalichan. It features Severus Snape, Lucius & Narcissa Malfoy, Bellatrix & Rodolphus Lestrange and Regulus Black and mostly takes place in 1979 – 1981 but has forays both significantly forward and back in time. It is also a multimedia project.
Disclaimer: It’s JKR’s world, I just mess about with it.

  • I just read through all of Ghosts. As much as I've been sheepish about reposting it and grumbly about all I have to fix, and worried about having to jump back into the end of its sequel, and it being entirely not a genre I excell at and heteronormative to a fault and yadda yadda yadda -- you know what? I love the thing, now that I'm past the horridly problematic chapter, and just into more minor issues. I love these iterations of (most of) the characters, I love my OCs. Just, in spite of itself really, the thing really is quite something. Nifty.

The bad news is that a particular rather adult scene in it got deleted from fanfiction.net. I think it still exists on my mac, so I either have to deal with that or rewrite it (and honestly, it may need to be rewritten anyway) -- and it's not like I'm sheepish about writing porn or anything, but this particular Snape iteration was always sort of actively hostile about it. It's hard to explain, but sometimes my characters get so aghast with me, it's as if they storm off (a problem we largely don't have with Descensus because everyone is a bit slutty or a bit prone to addiction).

Well, I've promised people things lurking on the mac anyway; and I need to look at something else on there for reference for the origfic project, so I might as well fight that battle this weekend.

Technical problems in Descensus land, but hopefully they will resolve shortly. I assure you, we're as eager and frustrated as the audience right about now.
[livejournal.com profile] rahalia_cat passes on a rumour that Paul Bettany may be signed to play Lord Asriel in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

    http://rahalia-cat.livejournal.com/1197061.html

On one hand, this is a vague dissapointment to me, as Pullman has made a lot of noise about how he'd love to see Jason Isaacs do it (one imagines the committment to the new TV series and HP make that difficult if not impossible especially with the intention to shoot the three films back to back). And it's hard for me to get my head around the physical image of Bettany in the role, who in my mind has the right coloring for it, but doesn't take up nearly the space I've always thought Asriel must. Of course, Jason Isaacs doesn't really take up nearly the space that acting around children and the skills of the HP costumers make him seem to, so it's probably moot. For those who have read the books, I think the idea of Isaacs in the role was so interesting specifically because the man has always been vociferous and anything but genteel about his own politics, and watching him defend HDM (which is certain to enrage lots of people if they do it right) would certainly have been amusing.

For those who haven't read the books, Lord Asriel is not a villain (to correct an assumption made in the comments at the linked post). Merely, he has a very particular goal and no comprehenion that there should be limits in achieving it (rather, he's peripherally aware of this but can't figure out why he should care). One could even argue that the goal is altruistic, although his desiring of it is purely about his vanity and the matter of a certain interpersonal affair. The character largely has all the aspects we love in our villains, but to say he is rather largely misses Pullman's point.

This menstruation thing is a drag, although at least my celiac has effected that.

Too many obligations today, not enough time and not sure how that's all going to play out yet.

    Ugh telemarketers:
    Me: hello?
    Them: Is Ms [roommate] there?
Me: She's not available right now may I take a message?
Them: Is Mr [roommate's last name] there?
Me: There is no Mr [roommate's last name]. Are you a telemarketer?
    Them: Yes.
    Me: Go away.

Weird, unuseful dreams. I dream a lot about being poisoned, not in any artful sense, but by Entemann's chocolate donuts.
Also in movie news, The Prestige looks like it's going to rock (see trailer here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/theprestige/large.html).

This is one of those books that's dear to my heart, but I never really write about, so I'm relieved. I'm relieved that it's not shiny, pretty Victorian, and that the director gets that it's scary.
