I'm screwing around with this site called Gather.com. It's vaguely similar to AC, although the ability to earn cash is less direct (although it seems fairly easy to earn gift cards, and we all need more B&N gift cards) -- as it's one of those point system things. I'm not writing original content for them, but reposting non-exclusive content for other sources there to see if I can pick up some revenue or stuff on the side. On the other hand, and this may interest some of you, they do allow adult content (AC tries to stay PG-13).

Annoyingly, there is no way to post an invite link (you can, of course, just hop over there and join yourself). However, if you're interested in joining, let me know, so I can email you an invite (yes, points for that).

For those of you not reading the in-character hate meme, it's gotten much funnier since about the middle of last night.

Snape is arguing with himself about shagging James Potter.
The Squid and the Castle had a lovers spat.
Draco is apparently shagging everyone and calls Snape "mummy" at one point.
Ron gets hot when Hermione absues Draco.
Pikachu is arguing with something, but I don't know anything about that fandom.
Mulder is still a porn addicted freak and both Krychek and Scully are really sick of it.
House likes to spank people.
The mutherfuckin' snakes on the mutherfuckin' plane are all vying for Samuel L. Jackson's attention.
and there's some Pirates of the Carribean drama about a wig.

Seriously, this is the funniest shit ever.

the tragedy of acceleration

It occurs to me that the reason I so love JKR's wizarding world may not be the characters, the magic or the funny clothes, and don't get me wrong, I love all that. It may be that in that world time always moves at the same pace. It doesn't in this one -- or so I thought looking at the People Magazine retrospective on the '90s in the drug store; didn't we used to wait longer to engage in these exercises?

Even my Regency obsession doesn't solve the acceleration problem, for the Regency era is arguably when acceleration began -- the world was getting bigger then, travel faster and lives longer. Ways of conducting the self suddenly became much more what we would considering recognizably modern compared to what they had been in the 1700s.

Wizarding society is stagnant though -- that's its toxicity, but it's also what allows genius to thrive in its confines. In an accelerating world everyone must be a Slytherin (welcome to the petty games of our world); in the wizarding world it sets one apart. After all, manipulation is a form of forcing time to bend to your will for rarely is manipulation anything more than accelerating the natural gravity of other people's choices.

I, apparently, desire a world where my greatest skills allow me quiet excellence, as opposed to merely contributing and an exhausting and often utterly valueless acceleration.
