I have known
elionwyr on LiveJournal for years. Although we have never met, we have supported each other, sometimes closely and sometimes at a distance through the forming and dissolution of relationships, various agonies of identity and the singular peculiarity of being people who are not always present in the physical world in the way other people expect us to be: I mean, I've had something she made me for someone
who doesn't even actually exist on my wall for years now. People who get that sort of thing are precious.
At any rate, soon, she's jumping out of a perfectly good airplane to raise money for a charity called SOAR that works with survivors of sexual violence.
Charities like SOAR benefit everyone, not just those with direct relationships to their target mission. You may not have ever experienced sexual violence, but there's a good chance someone you love, someone you like, someone you work with, someone you haven't even met yet, has. Sexual violence perpetuates violence throughout a society, has significant economic costs and its legacy can function as a disruptor to pretty much any positive interaction. Organizations like SOAR work hard to change all of that.
elionwyr's goal to raise $600 for this organization by jumping out a plane (something I would seriously not have the stones to do). She's up to $400 already.
Here's the thing. There's like 500 people theoretically reading this. I think she can raise a hell of a lot more than another $200, don't you?
