Where do I start with the problems with this question?

Gender essentialism flame-war Friday? or the rather obvious questions of privilege?

And that aside, is this rocket science?

Men are less likely to be raped; and more likely to earn higher wages for comparable work.

Women are more likely to get free drinks in bars and are expected to dedicate a higher percentage of their on-average lower incomes to maintaining their appearance.

And when people point this out, some asshole always shows up to say "but it's so hard to be a man; we're made to feel bad for desiring women all the time."

Oi. LJ!
John Barrowman on Matt Smith:
Have you met him?
"I have - I was doing some radio publicity for the show and he was brought into the press office to meet everybody and he made a beeline for me. We talked a little bit and he's a nice guy - he's really excited about it. After he left, I felt like I'd cheated on David! But in the world of Who, we're used to the Doctor regenerating and that's what happens."

  • Found a good Dragon*Con airfare, but may wait to see if I can do better. It cost us $300 each RT last year, I just found $229 RT at non-terrible travel times.

  • The airfares for WriterCon remain shitty thus far, but I can't find any sales farther out than June. Will keep watching.

  • I made the awful mistake of taking a nap last night. It made me cranky and crazy and Patty was very gracious about it. But no more naps! That was awful.

  • Tonight we're going to see Watchmen because she needs to catch it before it leaves the big screen.

  • Tomorrow is Dances of Vice. I suspect I'm actually going to wear a dress, as it will be warm out, and without my suit being done yet, I don't feel like half-assing it. But I'm not sure. Will depend on my mood.

  • I am wearing all white today. So of course I've already spilled Vitamin Water and balsamic vinegar on myself.

"To not be a man is to not be fully human and that’s terrifying."

Yeah, I've nabbed that somewhat out of context, but it's amazing both in and out of context.

The piece as a whole is riveting. No surprises, I don't think, but relevant to multiple recent discussions here, and really resonated with me from low-level parental paranoia about their kid being gay to the idea that masculinity is some awesome prize in the crackerjack box (that, by extension, should be maintained regardless of cost to self and/or cost to others).
