in completely other fannish news

OMG, Doctor Who this weekend!

And Torchwood casting spoilers!

And, dude, am I the only person watching Game of Thrones who hasn't read it? Which makes it all weird, because my lens is not anyone's I know.

When does new Sherlock season happen? It like White Collar is the show that's really shiny for me in short bursts and then I forget about it completely.

*raises hand* Watching Game of Thrones and have read no George RR Martin. I'm likin' Sean Bean in this role, and might have to keep watching.

[identity profile] tsgeisel.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you avoided all the Game of Thrones spoilers out there? Are you coming from a totally fresh perspective?

Because I'd love to hear your take (or anyone's, but you're a good writer) on the series with a viewpoint that I can't share. (I almost enjoyed reading the folks at BSC (I think) where a team of two, one who's read it, one who hasn't, are going through the book, but at a pace of one chapter per month or so, I'm finding it not worth the bother.)

Although, I have to say, even knowing how the first episode would end (once that particular scene started up), it was still powerful. The power of the cliffhanger, I suppose.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a lot of spoilers, but I also have some things that people have worked hard to keep from me, so it's a mix.

[identity profile] mithrigil.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't know THE book one spoiler, and the people watching it with her are trying to keep it that way.

[identity profile] tsgeisel.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean she's managed to avoid the fact that $FAKE_SPOILER happens and that $MAJOR_CHARACTER is actually the $UNINTENDED_REFERENCE to $MINOR_CHARACTER?

I'll have to make sure not to mention that.

(I also find myself wondering what you consider THE spoiler, because there's a lot of potential spoilers that you could be refering to, emotionally, plot-wise and otherwise. That's what happens in big books.)

I am trying to think of ways to tell you which spoiler I mean without it showing up in her inbox.

The one that you could find in the Wordy Gurdy game section of your newspaper?

[identity profile] tsgeisel.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I sent you mine via the private message function of LJ.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the part where the crew of the Enterprise totally show up from a parallel dimension and Anya's direwolf bites Worf on the butt?

Yeah, it would suck if that got ruined for her.

(I'm 99% sure I know which spoiler you're talking about. And glad I read the book a couple years ago, and so can't be spoiled.)

[identity profile] kproche.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
And in 2-3 weeks Issue 2 of DW Insider comes out and we find out how badly they've mangled the tale of Tiki Dalek...

(Who is about to be flat-packed and shipped to New Jersey)

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow! Exciting!

[identity profile] myrrhmade.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching GoT and haven't read it either. Also, did you hear that Helena Bonham Carter might play the first female Dr.? I would love me some of that.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there going to be a female Doctor?

[identity profile] airspaniel.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That rumor's been flying since Tennant's regeneration. Best casting theory I ever heard for it was Miranda Richardson, but I don't put a lot of stock in it actually happening anytime soon.

[identity profile] myrrhmade.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure. Here's one of several articles about it:
http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2011/04/fans-want-helena-bonham-carter.html
I'd love to get excited about this, actually.

[identity profile] jigglykat.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That looks more like just random for funsies poll that fans took vs. Team Cardiff actually considering casting a female Doctor. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

[identity profile] myrrhmade.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point.

Am watching Game of Thrones and have never read the books.

And woot! So ready for Doctor Who this weekend. I missed the Torchwood casting spoilers and will have to hunt those down.

[identity profile] tekalynn.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, I've read (some of) the books and haven't seen the series yet.

New Sherlock is coming this fall, apparently. (They'll obviously have to schedule filming around Martin Freeman's stint of hobbiting.)

[identity profile] dulcinbradbury.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really like to see it & I have not read the book. In fact, I know nothign about it. -A

[identity profile] cobweb-diamond.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not read game of thrones but i'm waiting to see what other non-readers think of it before i watch. so far all the reactions have been SUPER enthusiastic, but also filled with a zillion references i didn't understand.

[identity profile] eumelia.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Going to watch and have not read GRR Martin, because I'm not keen on High Fantasy as a literary genre (also, I don't like GRR Martin as an author).

I've been doing my best to avoid all spoilers to everything EVER!

Curious why you don't like him as an author? I don't know him at all and have been waffling about whether to buy the cheap set of 4 paperbacks on Amazon with all the hype about the series, given that I certainly won't see it until it's out on DVD.

[identity profile] eumelia.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not anything in particular, but I find him klunky and long winded in his descriptions and character building.

Also, High Fantasy just isn't my thing when it comes to books.

Yep, will be starting out on GoT fresh when I get around to watching it!

[identity profile] guruwench.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read it, either, so you aren't alone, no. I liked the first episode of Game of Thrones, and may read the books, unsure as yet.

[identity profile] noveldevice.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried reading the first book, many years ago, and remember dropping it in disgust after about fifteen pages. I didn't like the author's style and found myself unable to muster any interest in the characters or story. If I don't care about what's going on inside fifteen pages there is absolutely no reason to continue, in my opinion.

When I said this last night to a friend in response to his adjuration to watch the series, he called into question my literary determination (said, "Oh, so you can't handle a slow burn?"), which really made me angry, because I read Latin and Greek texts for a living. I don't think my literary determination can be impeached, considering!

[identity profile] shadesong.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read the whole series so far, and Adam hasn't read any of it. This makes for a challenging viewing experience for me as I struggle to not spoil stuff! We'll be doing join reviews once the cat is well and we can focus on something other than OMGcat.

August was the last I read about when Sherlock comes out again. They've supposedly started pre-production for filming. Can't wait. :D

[identity profile] esper3k.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My girlfriend also has not read the books, but hasn't seen it yet.

Did you find yourself missing out on anything watching the tv series but not having read the books?

[identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching it and reading at the same time. I'm hoping to keep ahead of the series as I read the book.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Patty's read 'em though, right? Because that's how D. & I are watching -- he's a GRRM virgin, and I've read them all.

He liked the first ep tho! And so did I -- it was pretty exhaustive in its coverage I thought.

BUT YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE BORGIAS AND SEE CISSY!

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, so -- the symmetry continues!

And I didn't realize it was for Cissy! Excited!

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
re: symmetry - INDEED!

re: borgias -- Other things too! But Cissy is the OMGWTF EEEEEEP most obvious thing.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
Same at my house - I haven't read them but my girlfriend has. I enjoyed the episode though!

[identity profile] fourzoas.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
As a lurker who's trying to break the lurking habit...

On Game you're not alone; I downloaded the first book to read, but gave up in favor of continuing on with Neverwhere. I figure il get around to the books eventually.

[identity profile] killerweasel.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
They're supposed to start shooting the next 3 episodes of Sherlock in May, once Martin Freeman is on hiatus from shooting The Hobbit. I think it is supposed to be aired in September.

[identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read it, and I'm probably going to be watching it, and I have NO SPOILERS. Can I keep it that way? We'll see!

[identity profile] viciouswishes.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also watching it without having read the books. (Reviewing on my real name blog...)

[identity profile] thinking-lotus.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I have read the books, but honestly can't remember much from them. They are so rambly, and there is much confusing back story, which I assume will be cleaned up for the series or else it would be unwatchable.

Having read it, I'm not even sure what the Big Spoiler is they're referring to higher up in the comments. It's not really that kind of book. I mean, you don't read it for the plot.

[identity profile] gwyd.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read the books either. I wish they'd write the character's names in big letters under their faces when they first apear as I have no idea who people are talking about, not being able to catch the names through the birmin howls going on in my house during dialog.

[identity profile] bodlon.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read Game of Thrones, but I have a friend who is writing legitimate spin-off material for some of Martin's stuff, so I occasionally hear crazy details.

I need to catch this, though. I keep hearing it's excellent.
