so that other thing happened
Jun. 26th, 2011 10:13 amYesterday, while we were out, someone smashed a window in our bedroom, that isn't even over the fire escape, with a baseball bat. They did this with so much force shards of glass were embedded in a wall on the other side of the room.
Our laptops and ipods were stolen.
We're fine, the cats are fine, the work loss and the replacement costs are huge. And ther was an amazing adventure with an unccoperative super and trying to buy ply-wood at 11pm on a Saturday.
We're also going to be trying to break the lease and move ASAP.
So that happened.
We're exhausted, headed to pride and then (for me anyway) the Apple Store.

Date: 2011-06-26 02:34 pm (UTC)I also think you have a case for breaking the lease. I hope you find a better place soon at less money than you are paying now.
You don't need this kinda stress
Have a great time at Pride. I bet it will be one heck of a party.

Date: 2011-06-26 03:43 pm (UTC)If you have renters insurance - you do, right? - get in touch with your insurance agent right away. S/he'll want a copy of the police report.
Breaking your lease may be super tricky. Generally, a break-in isn't considered good enough reason to break your lease. (The reasoning is that if you owned a house and someone broke in, you wouldn't sell your house and move.) Your landlord has an obligation to mitigate damages by trying to re-rent, but s/he can take you to court for any months that the unit remains empty. Before you go about trying to break the lease, consult with a Tenant's Union for advice. They usually have a firm handle on ALL of the loopholes you can use to get out of a place with a minimum of fuss and bother.
