Okay, apartment hunting is no longer abstract. We want to move by the end of July if at all possible.

2K or less. 2 bedroom or equivalent (we need an office). Manhattan or Brooklyn in a building without an absentee landlord.

If you hear of anything, let us know.

I'm of no help there, but I hope you find something wonderful very soon!

Rent or buy? Would you rent from an owner if they were vouched the hell out of? Our friend who was the stage manager for Lion King took a job at ... I think DePaul, and they haven't sold their place. Doorman building, I think technically Harlem, extremely nice, two bed two bath.

Renting. Would honestly prefer to rent from owner possibly.

Well, if that location suits you, they are beyond nice people, and I am happy to intercede as far as I can. Let me know.

A close friend of ours lives right near there. If they are comfortable with cats (we have two) we'd love to be put in touch.

Yis! Many cats have scattered kitty chametz in that condo. I just messaged them and asked their preferred price range for such an endeavor and gave them your specs for that.

(I thought of you because, for NY, that apartment is a marvel of possibly-private space, and the kitchen is not as completely mad as it could be. :) )

For the record, we may be willing to go above 2K for something really awesome, so if they are hovering on the plus side of that number by not a huge amount, please let us know anyway.

You should totally be able to find something for 2K somewhere. It really just breaks down to neighborhoods & what specifics/amenities you can't live without.

Having just been through the rental search nightmare, I feel for you. Luckily, you're both adept at internet searching: that's where we found our place. Even if a place that you fell in love with is rented, always ask the management to call you if anything frees up within the next few weeks-also how we found our place :)

Would you consider Yonkers within walking distance of both MetroNorth and the #2? I might have a lead or two in my neighborhood.

Sounds like you may have found something, but may I also recommend a real estate agent? Mark Woodcock is a friend of mine (just tell him Lynn Kendall of Jackson, PA, sent you). He's smart, skilled, nice, and fairly flamingly dramatic -- I bet you can imagine how that, along with a Southern accent, went over in a small rural PA high school in the early 1970s.

Does he do rentals? I didn't get the impression from the site he did?

I seem to recall a friend of my mother lived in this building back in the day. She never had anything bad to say about it.

I don't know that much about living in NYC, but I mentioned your situation to a friend of mine, and he sent me a link to this listings site. I put in the dollar limit, and here's what it showed me: http://ow.ly/5sn8V

I hope this helps somehow.
