America doesn't feel safe; it feels like Starship Troopers and keeps inducing the same sort of nervous hysterical laughter as that film does. It's the sound of heilocopters and mothers on the radio listing off their sons in the military and asking for Walk Like an Egyptian because it's the one stationed in Iraq's favourite song.

Meanwhile, Kinsey didn't get a single Oscar nod? I'm fucking outraged.

More on both later.

Well, I'm already vaguely a published poet (although it's been some time), so yeah. Will email momentarily.

laura linney- best supporting

But despite that, I'm also outraged. I mean, Ray for best picture? At least Scorsese is up for director. Looks like another year of being pissed off while watching the oscars.

And they need to work on their definition of supporting.

Ah, okay. But Neeson really should have been nominated.

The "supporting" thing is actually the fault of sutdios, which will place people int he supporting category if it can be remotely justified if they think their chances of winning are better there (hence Clive Owen and Closer). This came ot light particularly vividly with The Hours, where the supporting actress nomination from there had more screentime and the lead actress nomination.

Agreement on all counts. If my last visit was any indication, NYC has it worse than anyplace on the West Coast, but signs of new America are here also. It all happened so very fast, from the happy Clinton, dotcom-bubble 90s to creeping fascism and endless warfare in 3 years.

I completely agree about Kinsey, both it and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind should most definitely be on the list for best picture. I suppose that I should be grateful that Passion of the Christ isn't up for that one and was only nominated for three.

What about....

Hey personally my favorite movie of 2004 was Hellboy...which got banned in some southern markets because of the title...and taken out of some theaters and replaced with The Passion of the Christ. *shudder*.

I'd say welcome home, but that sounds rather flip and cruel under the circumstances. So um, it's your own bed again and hopefully that much is good.

I share your outrage over Kinsey. [livejournal.com profile] darkrosetiger says it's politics, and I say it's studio politics, and the big man who shares my brain is only annoyed because he thought Bill Condon was robbed.
