It appalls me that Memoirs of a Geisha received design nominations when its costuming was neither historically accurate nor interestingly reinterpretted for a story that relies so heavily on the aesthetic conventions of its world to drive it. Really seriously irritates me. At least it didn't get a makeup design nod.

I find it particularly galling in the case of Memoirs of a Geisha because it is set so close to modern times the knowledge is not obscure and the aesthetic is _not_ as they apparently believed in accessible to a Western audience. I nitpick stuff like this when it comes to other eras and things I'm knowledgeable about too, but it makes me extra crazy in this case, because I've made and worn kimono and used to live with someone from Japan. The basic standards of teh garments, regardless of the adornments of geisha remain the same. I just don't get it.
