So a new academic HP conference has been announced. My gf absolutely should do a paper for it. The horror, of course, is that _I_ want to do a paper for it, but to the extent I know what on, it's utterly impossible -- that is, all the stuff that interests me, mainly in the social construction of wizarding society, is a big gaping black hole thanks to the way JKR writes -- oh, duh, I suppose I could examine the ways in which the big gaping black hole is filled in by fannon, but fuck me, do I not want to read that much fanfic, ever, nor conversely have to bump up against the less interesting discussions of JKR's portrayal of women (I'm much more interested in what we must speculate about the role of women in wizarding society than I am with the fact that JKR mostly gives her female characters short shrift (look at the way the teeth have been taken out of both Hermione and Tonks) and has a tendency to define her evil and/or chaotic male characters by their feminine traits).

noooo. that much fanfic would be mind-breaking indeed. though i'd love to read the paper that you are not going to write, because I am also trying to fill in the wizarding cultural holes in *my* fic, though I am writing from the other side than you. though I am still writing Snape. and Narcissa.

Does this live anywhere yet?

Kali and I recently realized the gender balance of the wizarding world as we're writing it is seriously odd, but that we've sort of automatically compensated for it with the rules of behavior. What's odd, is that it actually seems to work with the gender balance in JKR's writing (there aren't enough witches) although that can certainly be explained more easily than our convolutions (even if one doesn't include the fact that JKR is notoriously bad at math).

Indeed it does. I wrote them all for [livejournal.com profile] blanketforts which is an R/S community. So they come as part of a series. I have made a (post-dated) fic index in my journal so you can get to them from there and not have to wade through the community. Though there is a good deal of excellent writing in there. I reccommend [livejournal.com profile] rosemaryandrue if you haven't read her already for she is talented and addictive.

Actually, I decided not to post-date it, so it should pop up on your friends list like normal.
