Feb. 19th, 2006 11:16 amSo I need to buy a phone card for calling England. I've found there are lots of online websites for this, but does anyone have recommendations because the whole insdustry seems slightly sketchy to me, and somewhat befuddling.
Thnx.

Some cards will give you a lower per minute rate but then will deduct a fee every day as "maintenance". Others will charge you this fee once a week. Some have huge connection fees. Some will charge you more for calling somewhere that is not a "major city" - their definition, not yours.
If you only use them once in a while, go for a higher per minute rate and no daily fees. The card will usually be good for six months or so. (I have had them last much longer sometimes.) Just tuck it by your phone and use it for all your long distance. You can usually buy them in denominations as low as $5. The first time I got one and called Glasgow I talked for almost 90 minutes and was only charged about 60 cents.
When you dial in to their system they will tell you how much money is left and after you dial the long distance number it will tell you how many minutes you have left.
Read the fine print, ask around, then go for it. I'll never use "regular" long distance again if I can help it. I've got a five dollar card by the phone right now. After about 4 or 5 calls to another Canadian city I still have well over 4 bucks left.
Good luck,
Ekatarina
