health update

My tests came back entirely normal, which is kind of frightening. I'm waiting for the doctor to call to see what we should do next. I'm scared that this means I'm seriously ill and might never be able to eat anything other than rice again.

Oh hun. I will keep thinking good thoughts for you. Are you able to digest broth?

Miso seems bad, spicey thai soup seems to be okay, not sure why.

Huh, that's odd. I am stumped.

*huggles*

Do you think it might be IBS? Have you looked into that?

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Other than the sudden onset of the whole thing, this is looking increasingly likely.

My IBS had a sudden onset.

Ask if this could be a gall bladder problem. That tends to cause IBS-like symptoms and pain. It's an easy surgery if it is that, and the scarring's not so bad, either.

No vomitting, only one day of fever, no specific pain, so they've been thinking no on that. I may email you about what's going on in my head about the IBS possibility, it's wrecking havoc with my mental health in a way you might grok.

I think it is usually sudden onset. The nature of the syndrome is, well, its suddenness.

I'm sorry about the scary. *hugs*

It's possible that you've got some sort of late-onset intolerance: gluten, lactose, corn, other? All of those ingredients show up in some pretty sneaky places sometimes. I went a good 2 1/2 months not being able to eat anything but potatos before I was able to get to the doc who finally diagnosed the celiac.

I hope you figure it out soon; I know how miserable it can be.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much so. Right now we're looking at lactose in particular, and IBS in general.

[identity profile] raaven.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about the lactose bit, but if it turns out to be IBS, it might be useful for you to check out http://www.scdiet.org/. It's one of the places I found a ton of info (IBS was listed as a possibility for me, too) when I was going through my own intestinal hell.

Also (in response to "weird list" comment below), when I finally got to the GI doc and we determined celiac, she said that my weird list of things could be about either hidden ingredients or the fact that my guts were, in essence, just FREAKED OUT at the time, and so anything the least bit difficult to digest was setting it off. I stayed on an incredibly bland diet while clearing my system of wheat, and then once everything had settled down, added a lot of stuff back in, and was fine with it after that.

Wow, I seriously hope it's something simple and treatable and not some terrible allergy or IBS!

Suffering an undiagnosed stomach thing myself I can tell you it's no fun.

Good luck.

I had something similar (if definitely milder) that had doctors stumped for several years. In addition to the obvious (but annoyinbgly long) answer of an elimination diet, I also got useful info from going to a naturopath. I think most naturopathy is complete junk, and some of their recommendations are useless, but you might try going to one and seeing if things improve if you follow their recommendations.

Many health-promoting vibes headed your way from the Left Coast. I did wonder if, since miso seems difficult, could soy be a culprit?

This really sounds suggestive of food tolerance issues of some sort.
Hoping that a resolution is found soon.

Unfortunately it's miso, butter, anything fried (although olive oil seems to be okay), meat that isn't ridiculously lean, possibly cheese -- the list is slightly odd, and that's complicating it.
