This gen fic is blowing me away:
http://cda.morris.umn.edu/~webbrl/SmallestSlytherin

This is quite old, branches after book 4. Great OCs, great Snape characterization. Great McGonogall characterization and great Slytherin commentary in general.
"Miss Bulstrode," warned Snape sternly, "if you cry at what I'm about to say I will thrash you. I am truly sorry that being a Slytherin means you have to suffer injustice from allies more often than attack from enemies."

I can think of some times in my life when I could have stood to sit quietly with that insight for a long time.

I didn't find the first one to be more heavyhanded than necessary, but the later ones, I've run into that a bit, as skillful as the craft is. I do give her kudos for amking these peopel random varieties of Christians however -- spirituality in the wizarding world is one of those things that's almost a problem in cannon and is definitely a problem in fannon, and other than their being more of it than I have interest in through her presentation, I do think she gets it right more or less.

I also love that as much as I don't buy Snape as this casually sleeping around guy (although, I must say, she manages to make it work in the context of the story), I do like that we're absolutely aware that he's a young man. My biggest peeve about the films, as much as I love the performances from Rickman, Thewlis and Oldman is that these are not young men, and that's really the tradgedy of the lives of Snape, Lupin and Black. They're so young, and they've lost so much so stupidly. And it's just been wiped out of the films. And that's a shame.
