This gen fic is blowing me away:
http://cda.morris.umn.edu/~webbrl/SmallestSlytherin
This is quite old, branches after book 4. Great OCs, great Snape characterization. Great McGonogall characterization and great Slytherin commentary in general.
I can think of some times in my life when I could have stood to sit quietly with that insight for a long time.

"Miss Bulstrode," warned Snape sternly, "if you cry at what I'm about to say I will thrash you. I am truly sorry that being a Slytherin means you have to suffer injustice from allies more often than attack from enemies."

And she can be very heavy-handed with the morality lessons. While I agree with a lot of her points, it's not what I personally look for when reading fic. I do very much like the fact that the Slyths are finally portrayed as be real kids, not Minions Of Evil. And you can't help but admire an IC Snape who obviously cares for his Snakes without being all schmoopy about them.
I'll stop here in case you haven't had a chance to read the other sequels, because I don't want to give anything away. :c)

Date: 2006-09-04 03:57 pm (UTC)I also love that as much as I don't buy Snape as this casually sleeping around guy (although, I must say, she manages to make it work in the context of the story), I do like that we're absolutely aware that he's a young man. My biggest peeve about the films, as much as I love the performances from Rickman, Thewlis and Oldman is that these are not young men, and that's really the tradgedy of the lives of Snape, Lupin and Black. They're so young, and they've lost so much so stupidly. And it's just been wiped out of the films. And that's a shame.
