Many of them were party promoters -- getting money for the heads they brought into events and some being paid absurd amounts of money for appearances at "mundane" parties wanting to have an edge. Many had trust funds, some dealt drugs, some prostituted themselves. Many got jobs as bartenders and door people at the clubs they frequented. Their art was the con and ekking out a living in some fashion for some period of time wasn't that hard, especially then.
