This is _the_ fic everyone has been going around rec'ing in the last 24 hours, but oh! There are some things in it that are not to my taste, some sentences I felt could be clearer, stuff like that, but it's terribly good in a "read this and then don't discuss it with me" slightly raw sort of way.

Severus/Hermione with a detailed Severus/Draco backstory. A few porny het passages, but graceful and plotty.

One of the funniest things to me about fanfiction at its finest -- is that for stories that are about possiblities within the parts of canon worlds we don't see, they are so often stories that are also often very much about their own hints and whispers as opposed to their main themes. This one carries a particular quality of needing to listen, both within and without its plot.

You might want to also have a link to The Harry Potter Lexicon handy, as it covers smaller details Wikipedia won't, also timelines.

The biggest thing that the movie will mislead you on (and you've only seen the first, so it's the case with fewer characters) is the ages of some of the adult characters. Snape, Lupin, Black and Pettigrew are all young men, in their their early 30s when Harry arrives at Hogwarts. Because of the casting, which is admittedly awesome, that part of the story's tradgedy is uttery lost. It's often utterly lost in fandom as well, as the movies very much made HP fandom explode, but it's important in a lot of the better stories.
