This is across the street from where my parents live.
http://community.livejournal.com/newyorkers/2091206.html

I can't get through to my father, who is older, can't get around very well and is probably at home. My mother may be at work -- should I call her and tell her? Oh my god.

By now, she probably knows.

She works on a sales floor in a jewlery store. It's very unlikely that she does.

I would definitely call her. I hope everything is all right.

*hugs you* I would call. That just put my stomach in knots.

::hugs::

I already called my mom.

She was at home, and you know what her reaction was?

"Oh! So that's what all those sirens and people are..."

::facepalm::

Call her.

How close does your mom live to it?

Thirteen blocks, and on the same side of the street.

Not as close as your folks, but still nerve-wracking.

Especially since the Heliport used to be right under our windows.

What I'm hearing/seeing is there is a helipad atop the building, and it looks (forgive me for putting it this way) like an actual accident. Apparently a helicopter struck the building.

No, there isn't one on the building. There is one right near there. It makes total sense that this type of thing happened,but it's still NOT GOOD.

Ah...details are likely very sketchy. And yeah, definitely not good, regardless.

Did you get ahold of your mom?

Apparently,she's at lunch. I left her a message.

Call her if you haven't already, and if you can't get through right away keep trying.

Chances are she already knows, but it will reassure you both.

omg

WNBC 4 is reporting that some people saw airplane/seaplane/helicopter made a sharp right turn into the building. Luggage was found on street along with two bodies and the wheels of the aircraft.

your post was the first i'd heard -- the power's been out here and i've been working on the laptop. jesus. i've gotta check on [livejournal.com profile] olivia_gum.

Fuck. Helicopters almost never carry luggage. A helicopter in that area makes sense. Anything else doesn't, and is more distressing in its way.

i know. :(

today's the 11th. supposedly there were reports before 9/11 that there were going to be 11 total attacks, all on the 11th of the month. :( i hope my bad feeling about this is very, very wrong.

I have to say, now that I know it's fixed-wing, my feeling about it is a little worse (see my update about why it makes no sense). That said, I still think it's more likely to be a suicide than a terrorism thing.

Or pilot error, or mechanical malfunction. It could be any number of things.

With that said, I hope your parents are okay. *hugs*

A plane had no business being within at least a mile of there. So that it was there at all to malfunction, is what has me so damn confused.

If my Mom was alive, she could explain this a lot better than I, what with her having been an Air Traffic Controller and all. But it doesn't take all that much time (less than a minute) for a plane to travel a mile off corse. And if there was some sort of serious mechanical malfunction, that's not entirely plausable. I'm sure the plane didn't travel that mile into an area it wasn't supposed to be before it malfunctioned.

Also, it's not to uncommon for a pilot to become disoriented with his/her surroundings and not quite know where they were. Since they were on Visual Flight Rules (VFR) they were relying on visual queues to determine their position. Easy to find yourself off course by a mile or so if you're not entirely familiar with the area.

Again, many possible causes, and I'm sure when it comes right down to it, it's just a horrible accident.

i'm sure you're right but yeesh...definitely keep us updated on your folks. if your mom can't get through your dad can manage for a bit, right?
