and then I won the lottery

rmI just popped down to Sock Man to get my socks for fencing. On my way, I saw a woman I used to work with, and despite liking her, I wasn't in the mood and so detoured to Sunrise Mart, thinking maybe they would have the bento box I wanted (they did! I now have it).
In the elevator going up I had a love at first sight moment of the sort I can't remember having had ever. She was Japanese, late-30s and blind. Her eyes weren't shaded or closed or moving back and forth or oddly arranged in any way though, just staring straight ahead, as if in mild surprise. She was asking someone leaving the elevator for the layout of the store and nodding as she memorized it. From her accent, I'd say she'd been in the states for about twenty years. What interested me about her the most though was that when she got out of the elevator she moved with a self-awareness I rarely see in sighted people, much less someone with a cane navigating an intollerably disorganized store. She greeted the employees in Japanese and English and then got someone to help her with various tins of appalling Japanese fish products. I don't know, she was just beautiful and self-possessed. Most people aren't. I lost about ten minutes of my day just watching her shop.
Anyway, then I got my bento, and because I spent over $10, got to spin the little wheel in the store lottery and then won some insulated carafe thingy and they rang a little bell and it was like being on a scary Japanese game show but without humiliation.
Um, weird day.
