Since sometime yesterday afternoon, I've been periodically smelling a very specific scent, that lof an oil used in love spells for candle magick. It's a very specific scent and if you were ever fourteen and a big honking idiot like me you probably know it.

This could be any number of things -- a sudden inexplicable shift in my body chemistry with some BPAL I wear all the time, some weird celiac neuro hallucination thing, or another mystery smell floating through New York that will eventually make homeland security news.

Regardless, it's annoying and creepy and weird. And sort of funny, as in funny odd, no funny haha.

Depending on who is lurking in my periphery, I have sometimes suddenly smelled jasmine, basil/rosemary, and cedar/pine.

Maybe someone's casting a love spell on you!

my thought exactly!

The question is whether that would count as direct communication or not.

Does it break the spell if direct communication is involved?

I dunno, I think I was just harking back to my whole "at least heterosexual men know how they are expected to communicate" rant.

Ah! I'd have to say no. Love spells, even if they come with mysterious scents, have got to be a pretty subtle way of declaring your intentions.

Which at least narrows down your options of who it could be a little.

Well, yeah. But why only say things that you know are actually true? It's much more entertaining the other way.

Right, right. I'll start that right after I eat.

Ha! You know, I bet there actually was an episode about love spells. Or if not, there should have been.

If not, I'm sure someone wrote it on the Internet.

I went through this really bad Skinner/Muldar BDSM fanfic thing for a while

As did everyone else. Well. Either Skinner or Krycek.

I spent months convinced I was either delusional or developing a weird form of synaesthesia because a specific Siouxsie and the Banshees album smelled like patchouli. Eventually I realized that my copy really did smell like patchouli, and for some reason, so did every other copy in London, and other people confirmed this. Years later a former record store manager explained that this album had been shipped along with some weird patchouli sample that went along with someone else's album - I forget what.

oils used in love spells are usually rose, vanilla, frankincense and musk usually so it could be any of those.

It's a very specific combination of things (probably those), but I've never had the ability to recognize. But I have a little tiny vial in my room of just what it is, but I haven't touched the thing in years, and it's been coming upon me all out and about as well as here.

Sorry, I just stumbled in here... I like to believe for some kind of cosmic reason or... something.

Anyway, the exact same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. A different recognizable smell, but not something I have here. I never could figure out where the smell was coming from, so I just figured it was one of those bizarre, inexplicable X-files type experiences () and tried not to worry about it. If you believe in otherworldly type stuff, subtle smells are supposed to be pretty common... And if they are pleasant, they are a very good sign. :-)

I sort of love that everyone is believing in a cosmic reason when I, who am pragmatic but not often rational, am all "science!" and everyone is just keeps saying, "naaaaah."

Oh, I went through the whole Scully-esque process of smelling everything in my environment (and I mean everything) until I decided nothing contained this scent, and I had no rational explanation. Since you have a bottle of the scent there, it's possible it's contaminated something you have. But having had the experience, I'm open to the possibility it's something weird and inexplicable, too. :-)

But it's sitting on a shelf that it hasn't been moved from in years. Glass bottle, no spillage ppossibility and no one comes in here othe than me -- not even the pets.

I have since yesterday smelled it walking down the street (3 times), on my comforter, and at a dance.

My inclination, then, is it's a good spirit or an angel. Maybe someone trying to remind you how much you are loved? :-) I know that's very squishy and cuddly, but it makes sense.

Scent works in mysterious ways...I touched a vial of essential oil to move it the other day and ended up baking bread that smelled like lavender two days later. WTF? (of course, lavender bread is not so bad but still...)

Maybe an omen, scents are known to present a coming of, or a message from. What ever the reason, I love the mystery.
