Many of you know I was seriously unhappy with LJ's first apology. Their most recent news post indicates how vast a restoration of accounts they are doing, and I have to say, I'm a lot happier.

BUT, Six Apart/LJ still has a lot to do to make me calm down. These things include:

a) making things right with users who have been branded pedophiles across the Internet (free journal rename tokens and public apology listing all wronged journals at minimum).
b) retraction of the CEOs statements claiming the right and ability to evaluate of what is art and academic study.
c) restorion of [livejournal.com profile] lolita07. Thank you!
d) answering questions about where gay users stand in light of the continued phrasing about banning journals that encourage illegal sexual activity.
e) an admission that they outright lied to users at the beginning saying this wasn't going on.
f) a better explanation of why this happened how and when.

I would also like to see much more from Six Apart.

I am also really unhappy with the amount of time I'm having to spend talking to people who think fic with underage characters in sexual situations promotes the rape of children. (I realize I can't actually blame Six Apart for this, but I feel they should do something to make up for it anyway.) And I do this not from the perspective from a fannish person but from the perspective of someone who is very dedicated to child protection issues and has therefore taken the time to learn what only looks like a problem and what really is a problem.

I also want an explanation of why they acted on the basis of a single complaint from a person connected to right-wing hate groups, and how the intend to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The explanation for that is exceedingly simple. WfI didn't just contact lj, they also contacted advertisers with screenshots of various pages, and said "Do you want your ads associated with this sort of thing." Some advertisers contacted lj and either withdrew ads or threatened to do so, so lj panicked because they feared loss of income. This has absolutely nothing to do with any political or social views held by anyone working for Six Apart, and everything to do with the fact that advertising is a powerful tool.

In short, the blame goes to lj for introducing ads and also to every last user who has an ad-supported account. Accepting advertising means that lj gave way some of its autonomy. The best way to stop this from happening again is to try to get people to stop using ad-supported accounts.

Yeah, that's in my incoherent f).

I am still so unspeakably upset and uncomfortable with all of this. And, from the comments in the [livejournal.com profile] news posts, it looks like at least 50% of the originally outraged are too.

Seriously!

People have been pointing that out all over the place, but still nothing.

It's really disturbing because he names his victim in his journal (because she's his daughter), and his old journal linked to a picture of her (although I don't know if it still does). LJ is not doing its part to protect an ACTUAL victim, and I'm disgusted by that. This child doesn't deserve to have an internet record of her abuse.

I told the news post that I would let the Innocence idiots know about this fact if they don't remove his journals at once. You know, in the interest of maintaining their policy. :PPPPPPPP

Yeah, I am really pissed. I actually cried about this earlier. It sounds really dumb but they wouldn't do anything when Jason was harrassing me. I respected that because it was their decision to enforce the ToS in the way which provided the freest speech possible.

AND NOW THEY'RE HARRASSING RAPE VICTIMS??????

This was just unbelievably triggering and awful and I don't even know if my response is proportionate or what.

I think your response was probably proportionate. I mean, I just wrote Patty a four page screed about this whole thing and flipped out to two of the peopel I work for about it today, and my only context is "as a gay Jewish porntastic woman, these things make me really nervous."

I'm just really appalled. LJ was always a safe space for us to have fun and hang out. I have pretty strong views about putting my money where my mouth is (see: this year's organic dairy & bath product quest) and I don't think I'll be giving it to LJ anymore, unless this shakes out in a way that I don't anticipate. This is just hypocritical and awful and ugh.

Fucking ads.
