Or, the implication being he's not as gifted as the books make it clear he is. Which is another thing that anoys me about the movies -- not only do we loose Snape's ambiguity, but we lose the sense of burden he has -- whether it be due to skill or task. He is a gifted person who has not been served well by being gifted. This is directly relevant to Harry's experience and it's JUST NOT THERE. That Snape is wound painfully tight has reasons in teh books, in the movies he's just odd.
