Publisher wants to know what magazines appeal to the media nerd demographic for potential advertising. This isn't something I actually have any knowledge of. Ideas?

I would say mags like Realms of Fantasy, Alien Skin (though that may be more SF than F), Abyss and Apex. There's a small magazine that I write book reviews for, Tales of the Talisman. It's got decent distribution, and the ads are fairly inexpensive. RoF is probably one of the biggest spec fic mags, and they have lots of college kids that read, from what I hear.

www.talesofthetalisman.com . David Lee Summers is the owner, editor and chief cook and bottle washer. Tell him I sent you.

And ask on the BU list, I'm sure they know of others I'm missing.

I'd check out Forbidden Planet or Midtown Comics and see what they have on the stands.

IAWTC.

I was actually wracking my brain, trying to remember the titles they had when I worked there.

Entertainment Weekly is my media geekery mag of choice, if you're looking for something mainstream and with a wide distribution.

I would imagine that's outside of our advertising budget ;)

I thought it might be, but I wasn't sure exactly what you were looking for.

Someone else already mentioned Apex, and I second that suggestion.

maybe not as expensive but still as mainstream:

almost all the media nerds i know read the economist. i know it's not related, but it's categorically true.

A lot of nerds I know (including fic writers) at least read, if not write for, Reason. I'd also have to wonder if Wired is another avenue...

Well, I read Harpers and Vanity Fair. Premiere sometimes.

The Wired demographic is a great HP lode, but the advertising rates are sky high.

There is, however, advertising on Wired.com, and the Wired Exchange, both of which are less expensive and handled by the same guy: Joshua Steele, 212.286.6890

Seeing as how most of the HP fandom is online and not in print media, I'm not really sure if magazines are the route your publisher should really be exploring. Sponsoring a banner on the Leaky Cauldron website might be a better use of money.

There actually is a Geek Monthly, which I subscribe to mostly for the name. How about The Onion -- their A.V. Club section seems pretty geek friendly.
