Apparently LJ has decided not to communicae with LJ users because that would reward bad behavior.

I think that's the "no, really, fuck off and stop using our site" message we were waiting for.

Aside from outraged, I'm really quite unutterably sad.

Isn't it SOP that when a company acquires a business, it acquires the obligations (including contractual obligations) along with the assets?

I think that depends on the individual situation.

However, the fact remains that the LJ TOS specifically says that LiveJournal Inc can make any changes that they want to the service, at any time. That includes placing ads on paid accounts, and that includes permanent accounts.

I thought that by California law, they had to give out warnings of when the TOS changes and allow people to cancel their accounts and possibly receive a refund. Does that only apply to the TOS, and not any of the other changes, or do you know?

I would think that the "placing ads on paid accounts" would be a change in/of the Terms of Service.

They change the TOS often, and all they have to do is tell us that they are doing so (or not, as was the case with the recent kerfluffle.) People can cancel their accounts, but LJ is not required to offer refunds.
