Apparently LJ has decided not to communicae with LJ users because that would reward bad behavior.

I think that's the "no, really, fuck off and stop using our site" message we were waiting for.

Aside from outraged, I'm really quite unutterably sad.

How are other places that use the LJ software, like Greatestjournal, offering themselves as alternatives?

I think that we may start want to consider mounting a campaign to move the communities we love off of LJ and onto a service that is friendlier.

There's pretty much only insanejournal right now. Friends of mine are working on a way to use OpenID to allow locking (or not) on WordPress and other platforms. Also, [livejournal.com profile] shadesong is proposing starting Elsejournal if she can get support.

GJ is dead. InsaneJournal is your friend. ^_^ The guy who runs it is very nice and welcomes fandom et al with open arms.

I love the immediate framing of anyone who doesn't toe the party line as troublemakers, LJ-haters, blackmailers, DESTROYERS... that's classic.

That quote is such a great example of siege mentality. I wonder if the rest of the interview is in the same vein. Please post a link if you find a translation of the whole thing.

LJ could be great if it weren't for the people who run it.

I have no idea.

Certainly, I can't give these folks another cent. But LJ works like shit if you're not a paid user and I don't want ads on my journal.

IJ is the closest thing in tmers of features I like, but it doesn't have the critical mass for networking.

I have no idea what to do, and figure I have a month to figure it out (when my paid account expires).

I'm here through at least 2010 because I bought a perm account and 2010 is when I get my value return for investing $150 in these guys.

I'll probably stay because me --and all perm accounts-- will be a boil on their butt. No ad revenues, no additional subscription monies.

I'm building a mirror on Insane Journal - same name. I have a permanent account. It is taking a very long time to move the posts, but I have exactly a year's worth of posts to transfer now.

If you move, or create a mirror, please friend me there.

If you're moving, I absolutely recommend LJ-Sec (http://www.mp3vcr.com/ljsec/). It won't move comments, but I used it to move posts from GreatestJournal to InsaneJournal and it worked like a dream. It also makes it an extremely quick process. The comments, of course, if you wish to move those are a bit more time consuming.

LJArchive is also a good way just to create an easy back-up of your LJ on your hard drive.

Oh, man. I don't have time to deal with this right now, but starting our own camp is looking better than ever. Sigh.

How stupid and/or desperate do we have to be to try to run our own LJ-alternative out of our back room, anyway? My other half can handle the servers, I can handle an abuse team and finances... but it's still completely crazy.

Gah.

I completely agree that SUP's response to the proposed boycott is utterly idiotic, but I remain equally dubious about the original reasons for the boycott and didn't support it. Getting rid of free, ad-free accounts is not an unreasonable business decision, I don't like it, but unlike almost everything SixApart did, I don't think it's wrong, stupid, or vile - it's merely annoying in the way that various business practices are sometimes annoying.

As for the interest-blocking, to my knowledge no one has had their interests deleting, and given the range of interests that seem to no longer show up on searches, I'm far from convinced that this is anything other than a bug. I'm annoyed that if it is a bug, SUP hasn't just said so & or fixed it. However, in the scheme of things, they're doing vastly better than SixApart and their randomly deleting journals and communities.

I was on the verge of giving up my paid account with SixApart, and was saved from that choice by the sale to SUP. At this point, I see absolutely no reason to stop having a paid account. If I see anything like proof that the interests-search bug is an actual decision, I might change my mind, but for now, SUP are at most a mildly annoying and somewhat clueless corporation, and not (as SixApart was) a corporation that bows to fundy scare tactics and abuses its users.

So...mass deletion of LJ accounts happened because..?

And SUP/6A is an innocent victim in all of this? Is he serious?

y'know, even if boycotts/mass migration don't work, that's not really the point, at least for me. It's their company, within certain very broad limits, they can do what they like with it.

I just don't have to play along.
