Episode 4/5: Goofy. Not really my thing. A few interesting twists. Some nice acting. Glad they addressed the repercussions of Rose running off.

Episode 6: I am not an old Who fan, so I came at it like Rose, not knowing particularly what the fuck a Dalek actually was. Amazing, compelling episode, great acting, some funny writing hidden in it.

The Dalek episode cemented the changes between the old series and the new series for me. More than the convincing--and expensive!--special effects, more than the incongruity of seeing the Doctor in the modern world, watching Christopher Eccleston's visceral hatred of the Dalek branded my brain with the realization that no, this is not the Doctor Who of old.

Three-and-a-bit seasons on, Dalek still stands out as one of the best episodes of the new series, to date - and not only 'cos it satisfies both old and new-school fans.

(Daleks didn't scare me when I was a kid - at least, not so I remember... but I have nightmares about them now, on occasion. I don't think I want to contemplate that notion too closely... ;))

(edit) PS. "Dalek" is based off one of the Doctor Who audio plays (by the same writer) called "Jubilee" (although for the 6th Doctor) which is ALL SORTS of wrong, for various reasons. It's brilliant, but also rather twisted/silly. Case in point: a horde of faux Daleks singing their chipper little Dalek Song. And you *still* feel sorry for the damn thing...

Episode 6 was when I went from enjoying (with the exception of 4 & 5) NuWho to loving it.

Prior to episode 6, I considered the Daleks essentially stupid but for one episode that explored issues of genocide. This episode was the first to make me take the Daleks seriously.

Like you, I am a new who, not an old who ;-)

But my co worker knows every single detail of the entire series start to finish and he'd fill me in (after I watched a given episode) on the little nods and what episodes it referred to and generally all the little references, of which there are MANY. They do a good job of keeping it interesting and fresh while incorporating all these tidbits...

The new Who has this (IMO) unfortunate affection for 'goofy' villains. I didn't think 4/5 were very strong, either, and offhand I can't think of many scripts Russell T Davis has written that I've been impressed by; but you'll remeet one of those critters in a future episode, and I think there are some very strong interesting moments in that script.

I knew you'd like "Dalek". :) I love that you had that freshness of not knowing what to expect!

As has already been said, I never found the Daleks particularly scary, but this episode, I think, does one of the best realizations of menace.
