Okay so now after going to two different vets (the second of which I actually like) and spending about $800 the situation with Little is as follows:

- infected/impacted anal gland thing being dealt with with Clavamox.
- apparent kidney disease from first visit non-existent.
- slow-growing carcinoma on her face that's not really worth worrying about but can be removed as a secondary issue should she need anesthesia for different reasons.
- some sort of mystery pancreatic problem that isn't urgent and may be related to her weight.
- oddly healthy teeth for her age.
- diet plan! (she's 18.4 lbs!!!!)
- return check in 2 months.

Little is 18lbs! Aww. If it is any consolation, Slate was easily that big. Koshka is probably not far off that. He's gotten fat in our care.

That sounds pretty good, actually. Sorry you had to spend so much money to find it out, but I'll bet Little is worth it.

I'm very glad all is at least acceptably well with her. It definitely sounds like time for some diet cat food.

That certainly sound like you have reason to be hopeful.
And relieved,as well.

Wonderful update.

Please tell me they did not talk you into buying prescription cat food for the weightloss!!!!!!!!!!!! This really concerns me because you mention the pancreas problem AND because I have spent over ten years doing feline diabetes support. It is alarming the number of cats that end up coming to the board with FD after switching to dry Rx cat food. Science Diet is CRAP food. Your vet gets a kick back for selling it so of course he says it's good. Mine does it too.

You can buy canned food and feed primarily that and see a weight loss. Dry food is high in carbs--it's like you eating pasta with a side of bread for every meal. There are some low carb dry foods such as Wellness CORE and some of the Eucanuba flavors. Ironically, the weight control is NOT one of them! However the chicken or salmon flavors are only 25% carbs versus the 37% carb content of Hills W/D.

Thanks for mentioning this. While Science Diet is better than grocery store kibble, there's a lot of evidence out there for "Stop feeding pure carnivores grain-based food!" Diet foods in particular tend to swap out fat for more carbs, which can actually make it worse; they you're just feeding smaller and smaller amounts of the wrong building blocks.

In short, yay wet food.

EXACTLY! The Eukanuba and CORE have much fewer "fillers" thus the lower carbs. I always mention them because I have some cats that will NOT eat canned. We tried the felidae during the wheat gluton affair, but none of the cats would eat it. NONE!
